Soso:
Was bedeuet, dass die Medienschaffenden ganz genau wissen, was abläuft...

philosophical jabbering

one of the turning points for me regarding the popular eco-movements was that they largely dismissed james lovelock and his ideas. except climate change of course, which he later on revised into less of a doomsday scenario.

he was too big a fan of nuclear energy. his idea to have farmers carbonizing things like cut shrubs and plow the resulting charcoal to bind CO2 like terra preta was good too, at least more sane than all the hyper-complicated ideas the technocrats now have.

i also believe in the gaia theory. it is rather self-evident for me. just observe how everything interacts in nature.

what makes everything so dreary is the people who say they are helping are doing the exact opposite and most believe them.

i don't think it's CO2 which will end everything. it's all the synthetic stuff with no equivalent in nature which will poison everything. it's genetic experiments which will go wrong at some point. it's mankinds thought that we know gaias workings and can manipulate them as we see fit which will undo us.

maybe the next ones will be wiser.

the moment you type a long response to a post, then decide it's not worth to deal with people and delete it.

Like a shell?

> What about Rust? It's a cool language for universal usage.

The designers borrowed heavily from C++ and JavaScript and I am not a fan of either language. For my purposes, the languages I currently use are sufficient.

The problem with a universal language is that trivially, you'll have a hard time making a language that fits every use-case. If I want to check how many 5xx errors FSE had since the logs rotated, awk is really concise:

$ awk -F"\t" 'NF==1{d=$3} $5>=500{e++} END{printf "Errors since %s: %d/%d (%0.02f%%)\n", d, e, NR, (e*100)/NR}' /var/log/nginx/access.log
Errors since [2022-10-18T04:40:09+00:00]: 219/1111120 (0.02%)

awk's good for interactive use, getting answers out of text files quickly, questions you come up with off the top of your head. It wouldn't be nearly as nice to do in Rust or almost any other language: it fits the space it was designed for. Same thing with the shell. Stitching a handful of small programs together in the shell gives you, interactively, the result you want in something that'd take easily ten times as long to write in Rust; conversely, I wouldn't do anything in the shell that required a lot of numerical computations, it's just not the language for that. C/Rust/Go/etc. don't give you a REPL, sometimes you want to talk to the machine interactively. Sometimes you don't need that. Sometimes you wanna use a memory-mapped I/O register to check to see if a pin is high or low and to generate an interrupt if so: you're not going to do that in awk. They're all full of tradeoffs like that: bare words are great for some interactive languages (Tcl, rc, bash, most shells), lambdas are convenient and expressive but closures have a runtime cost, garbage collection is great for a lot of languages but it's also got a runtime cost and some languages work better without it.
