Good morning, Shop! I haven't been good about checking in for #nanowrimo, but it's going reasonably well! Last night, I drove my protagonist a little farther toward his low point. He's got two more chapters to get through before the power of unexpected friendship breaks in and brings him out of the depths!

Tell me about your works in progress, NaNoWriMo or otherwise!

Wow I mention Mastodon in passing on stage at #CYBERWARCON during a speaker intro and an audience of ~350 interrupts me with spontaneous cheers and applause

It occurred to us that we never did an #introduction - and we've been here a whole 24 hours. We're #RaspberryPi. We're from #Cambridge, UK, where we design and make tiny #computers and #microprocessors. We've sold more than 50 million of our computers in the last ten years: you'll find them everywhere from hackspaces and schools to the #ISS, tracking penguins on glaciers and automating factories.

So far we're really liking it here.

Mind blown!

Just learned how to "follow" a hashtag. Sheesh. Want a useful thing to do.

But, I'm not sure how to explain it except when using the desktop (i.e. log right into your server without the app).

Type in a # and the word of your choice in the search window. Then it will pull up into a feed in one of the columns that are post (toots) with that hashtag. Then use that add icon. Presto!

Birdsite stuff

They’re still fighting the good fight on the birdsite: twitter.com/blastbots/status/1 #noxp

Reading so many accounts of especially Black people being harassed on here to the point of leaving. And also the type of aversion there is to talking about it. SMH. Can’t we have anything that isn’t racist by default?

ceoln boosted

@mmullins
It does -- the problem is social, not technical. The pre-existing monoculture has not adopted anti-racism. (A minority of servers notwithstanding.)

The thing about white dominated monocultures is that they're minefields because many white people will only express their racism when bipoc people show up. Till they open their mouths it's hard to identify them.

Further, the apathetic white majority will give white folks (esp. "known" folk) the benefit of the doubt every time.

15) Looking at the broader picture across the Mastodon network. The pace of signups has slowed. Two possible reasons:

1) Instances can't keep up with the demand. Additional costs are incurred when people join. Increased expenditure is needed by each instance to handle the new load effectively, otherwise things slow to a crawl. Delighted that our admins were front-footed on this and set up a contribution page

2) Elon hasn't trotted out any new madness triggering a fresh exodus

@alisca @doalty lots of folks with big followings don’t want to abandon them. Totally understandable.

I still visit Twitter and am struck by the contrast in exchanges. I haven’t seen anything that I would classify as uncivil on #mastodaoine.

That said, I expect these issues will raise their head here in due course much as I would like to think otherwise

If the original political post does not have a CW, how do I add one when I reblog it? #TwitterRefugee

Looking at what happened to Twitter and how many people over the last few days joined Mastadon. Are we finally entering an awareness that Social Media users have more power than they think they have? And that the yearning for a more ethical and humane version of Social Media has finally arrived? #TwitterMigration

ATTENTION MATH PEOPLE:
if someone studying ""computer science"" (blasphemous demon) comes up to you and asks if you want to learn about "lambda calculus", DO NOT ENGAGE! I REPEAT, DO NOT ENGAGE!!! this is how they TRICK poor innocent mathematicians into turning towards the DARK SIDE (computer).
it is NOT the calculus you know
it is EVIL
stay AWAY

... and for that matter and although I can't think of really great hashtags for those...

Questions on setting up a 30-year archive server

I want a good Linux box to start to finish and push unpublished projects and publicly archive my 30 years of stuff, as well as the NEXT 30 years god willing, mirror repos, put all my writing in one place etc. And I want to write a few paragraphs just for the website again too (a…weblog). I’ve made so much dumb stuff. Which means it will be a very heterogeneous hosting environment and should run stable long term release versions of Django, PHP, Java, SQLite, Postgres, Node, long batch processes, host a variety of files, etc etc. Probably a lot of virtual servers on one box. VERY low traffic (I mean who am I kidding), sometimes CPU intense, lots of disk space.

Default for me is an Ubuntu box on Digital Ocean. Second choice might be a Raspberry Pi or Intel NUC or more realistically this nice Huawei laptop running Ubuntu in the closet—but I kind of like everything being on tailscale and no open public ports at home. Under desk servers go south when the Wi-Fi gets rebooted etc. or a cat knocks them off.

Ultimately the server structure itself is kind of the main artifact. This thing will be a chore to admin just to keep the various middleware layers up to date. So the focus would be on a scriptable platform, using something like ansible, mirroring a local filesystem. Something where I can track and version control the system state. In theory I should love containers but I can never figure out why my Docker instances all disappeared. Or is this when I move to Nix?

Since I’ll be adminning it until I die, I’m fine with learning new stuff if it saves pain. This will be a slow incremental project.

(Longest term my guess is I can put everything into webassembly and load different server environments into the browser instead of having actual servers. Maybe I should just wait two years and avoid serving anything but static blobs which run virtual Linux boxes in the browser?)
