Hi, I'm JC! I am a poet who lives in Marietta, Georgia. I've published four books: La Petite Mort, What Magick May Not Alter, Daughter of the Wheel and Moon, and Amo e Canto, which won the Sow's Ear Poetry Prize.

I love #cats, #writing (especially #poetry, obvs), #tennis, #crochet, and learning #Italian.

I'm so excited to find new friends and get away from Tw*tter drama.

One of my favourite local landmarks, St. Patrick’s Holy Well just near the village of Marlfield outside Clonmel in South Tipperary.

It's so beautiful and peaceful there, especially at this time of year (though perhaps not so much on a bleak rainy day like today!)

What is telling about the New York Times's addition of AXIOS's Jonathan Swan to their roster is that they are publicly tripling down on their coverage on Donald Trump.

As if we need more toxic content in the elite political/media landscape of US. 🙄 #Fediverse https://www.nytco.com/press/jonathan-swan-joins-the-new-york-times/

@mubix mentioned starting to do #ff #followfriday posts over here to highlight other accounts you might not know have joined. I think it is a great way to spread the Friday cheer. So my #FF is #osint and #cyber based, of course. Here are some peeps to follow:

The statue of #Hercules in Ceuta, the small Spanish city in North Africa. The Monte Hacho mountain in Ceuta is considered to be one of two possible locations for the southern ancient pillar of Hercules. The northern pillar is #Gibraltar.

I guess it's #introduction time!

I've just joined Mastodon, and this seemed like the best Instance. I'm trying to figure out how this works, but I'll get there.

I'm a #queer #writer with an emphasis on video #games and #books. Trying to self-publish my first book 🤞

Is there a mastodon for animal peeps??? Looking for likeminded folks who care for and love animals #animals #rescue #animallover #dog #cat #horse #cow #farm #farmlife

More info in the replies! I take commissions when I have the energy and interest (I have a job, and ADHD, so it’s interest based for me!) Digital only for now, traditional - and resin and clay - when I’ve got my art room set up properly.

Lastly: Essentially, on Mastodon, making an attempt is better than not trying at all.

Practice! Find some images and take a stab at concisely describing them, to get yourself used to how to do it. The more you practice, the better you’ll get at it, and when you do it with real posts here, you’ll feel more confident and really help out the assistive technology users here!

If you have questions, drop them here I guess? 🙂

End #accessibility thread lol

Art: This is trickier! Mention the medium, the subject, the style, the composition and take a stab at the feeling it’s meant to evoke, the feeling of any expressive characters in it.

On Mastodon, the alt text field is actually pretty damn big, so if you want to you can actually go ham when describing a piece of art, and I’ve seen a few screen reader users here mention that they enjoy that with art posts.

Even though I do this stuff for a living, I admit that with art? I go a bit ham lol

And fourth, alt text is context dependent.

In general, alt text should be concise, no more than 150 characters, a single sentence that conveys the most important information.

Don’t add ‘image’ or ‘graphic’, the screen reader already identifies images, so that’s redundant info.

Is your image a screen shot? Is it a meme? Is it a photograph? Is it a piece of art?

Each of these types of images will need a different type of alt text.

Examples:

Ok, re: writing alt text!

My full time job title is actually ’Digital #Accessibility Tester’. I work at a university, making sure that the entire digital presence is accessible, everything from word documents to the VLE, the home web site, to PPT teaching slides and so on and on. And on. Our digital presence is enormous, yo.

Anyway! One of my specialties is the accessibility of images; visually, and through assistive technologies.

Gonna attempt to thread a little:

i am going into space with a big butterfly net and i am going to scoop up all of elon musk's silly little satellites and i will do craft projects with them. that's the grant promise

Reminder to new Mastodon folks:

These servers are not owned or maintained by a corporation. There's someone just like you volunteering their time, cash, and equipment.

Go to the about page for your instance, find the donate links, and kick these folks some $$$.
