My latest newsletter is about the original Star Wars trilogy, and how to make sure your story is actually about what it's about. (I promise this will all make sense!)

Hi all: Less Twitter and more Mastodon exploration. I’m a university professor, technology educator, data analyst, and futurist. I’m intrigued by all things ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; and many other things I have yet to discover! Filed under: currently living in a college world.

Hey @bookstodon help me remember the title/author of this book: It's about an island where women have wings and men don't, so the men cut the wings off of women to force them to be their wives. The book ends with a boy being born with wings. #bookstodon

Here's my #introduction post. I'm Brooke Binkowski, once a career reporter and now managing editor of TruthOrFiction.com, a debunking and counterdisinformation site. I've spent the last few years pretty much trying to prevent exactly the outcome we're living through right now and I'm super salty about it, but happy to find Mastodon, which is currently giving me a lot of hope for the future of the internet. Hope it continues.

Apparently there is an ongoing discussion about self-promotion for artists and other creators here in the Fediverse today.

My only take is, if you are a creator, artist, musician or a small business and I see you post something about works that you sell or get compensated for, I will boost you! 😊

About 7 years ago, my wife and I were out for a walk on the country road that runs along one edge of our woods. A skinny little kitty came running up to us, yowling with a mouth as big as his head. He followed us all the way back home.

We’d just lost a cat to something with really big talons (out here, the birds chase cats, not the other way around) and had cat food left over, so we put some out for him. He ate and ate like he hadn’t eaten for days. He probably hadn’t.

And he’s still here.

There was once a dream of a decentralised web.

As recently as a decade ago we had a still very active blogosphere, connected via blogrolls and RSS. Specialised web forums were still mainstream and messenger apps could largely interoperate.

Centralised social media slowly ate that dream. It had plenty of positives, but it pulled more and more people away from the open web and into corporate walled gardens.

Some people kept the dream of decentralisation alive. And now you are here.

Work from home has been a huge boon to employment access for disabled people.

“The jobless rate for disabled workers — typically in double digits and 12.3% two years ago — dropped to 5.8% in November … the lowest rate for people with disabilities since record-keeping began in 2008.”

Believe it or not, Christmas trees used to look like this 👇

🎄 Decorating the tree with loved ones seems like a common Christmas tradition now, but it was part of a judgement tradition on Christmas in the 19th century.

🔗 An expert on religious traditions walks us through the tree's history: theconversation.com/a-story-of

Webfinger (RFC7033) is weird somehow; I don't really understand it.

Aw, c'mon Joe!
