People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!

I'd like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Mastodon, is in fact the federated universe or as I've recently taken to calling it, the Fediverse. Mastodon is not a social network unto itself, but rather another component of a fully functional federated network made useful many other instances, such as Misskey, Pleroma, Akkoma and Peertube compromising a full federated social network as defined by the ActivityPub protocol.

Many computer users run a modified version of a Fediverse instance every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the type of Fediverse instance which is widely used today is often called "Mastodon", and many its users are not aware that it is basically part the Fediverse, developed by many other projects.

There really is a Mastodon, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Mastodon is only a single type of Fediverse instance: a program in the network that operates as a single node that interoperates with all the other types of nodes that you interact with. Mastodon is an essential part of the Fediverse, but useless by itself; it can only be functional in the context of a fully federated universe. Mastodon is normally used in combination with many other instances: the whole system is basically the federated universe with Mastodon added, or the Fediverse. All the so-called "Mastodon" distributions are really distributions of platforms that interoperate with the ActivityPub protocol.

Okay, I am now officially following Far Too Many accounts! :)

Reminder to new folks here, like my good friends @foxesafloat .

Write an introduction, use the introduction hashtag, plenty of people follow it, you'll get some nice boosts and engagement from it.

There is no computer feeding you what it thinks you'll like, you need to engage with people and people need to engage with you. So fill up your feed by following some folks.

Search doesn't work unless you use hashtags, people can't find you, so make sure you use hashtags all over the place.

Because there's no machine to boost posts, make sure you Boost(retweet from the old world) to share the tweets you like with others. A favourite over here will show the user who wrote the toot you liked it but do nothing for their engagement with others so help them out with a boost.

If you're posting stuff that others might not want to see, like my habit of terrible political hot takes, use the CW button to hide the post behind a content warning.

There's far better guides that this kicking around, but if you're new here, this is a good starter for 10.

Welcome to a more relaxed, better engaged environment.

Interested in learning more about the ? Here are three great books that will get you started with this emerging field:

1. Paige West: is Our Government Now: The Politics of Ecology in Papua New Guinea
A great read for those interested in . This book focuses on the Crater Mountain Wildlife Management Area, the site of a biodiversity conservation project in . West reveals how changing configurations of ideas, actions, and material relations would eventually drive project workers to unwittingly embody the role of government, and ultimately lead to the project's failure.

"The fundamentals of this system do not change. The drug world meshes with the government in a joint operation that shares money and power. The government hosts those traditional elites who have had their boot heels on the necks of the poor since long before the market for heroin, cocaine, and marijuana inflated the national economy in Mexico. The drug capos rise from the underclass, briefly flourish, then vanish into prisons or graves."

Right now I'm thinking of all the social media links.

All the widgets.

All the Twitter elements that are tied into so many fucking websites around the internet.

And all the work it's going to take to sort that shit out.

One thing that does convince me that transformation is possible on Mastodon is the number of replies and DMs that contain some variation of "I didn't think about this until you explained it," or "I used to think one way about this feature but your threads have me thinking differently."

As a philosopher, a member of a discipline that is famously abstracted away from experience, this is high praise and definitely cements my desire to keep making these threads.

Popped over to the other site to download my readied archive and holy crap the number of people who are acting like signing up on a Mastodon instance is akin to naming the parts of a carburetor while reassembling it is mind-boggling.

Especially from those who have things like "web" and "tech" and "software" and "developer" "love to learn" in their bio.
