Moderation complication, nazis
I hesitate to boost this, because people only reading the headline might misread it as "someone is accusing Eugen of *being* a Nazi, which is either true or a melodramatic Godwinization" or "Mastodon is full of Nazis".
TLDR:
1. Our instance, qoto.org, came under attack by an actual, swastika-waving Nazi. Mastodon is by no means full of such bad actors, but they do exist. Freemo provides evidence and history of the attack.
2. This bad actor created enough disinformation noise that Eugen chose to delist qoto from joinmastodon to protect the reputation of Mastodon. This was a win for the baddies.
3. Debates over proper moderation and federation policies are complicated and can grow heated.
@freemo @Gargron @trinsec @khird #qoto
(Interesting thing I learned when autocompleting those tags: there are several accounts impersonating Eugen.)
@pluralistic Of course, that assumes that you WANT the state to counter corruption. Much simpler to just declare that rampant corruption is "business as usual", and then you can enjoy your campaign donation kickbacks AND take the state for swimming lessons in Grover Norquist's bathtub.
Granted, that's probably not a sustainable model, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ...
So I decided to post the article I wrote (linked below) on twitter and am going to dump some money into promoting it there. Gotta get some attention to this. Go boost over on twitter if you'd like.

Here is the codebase. If nothing else, if you wanted a foundation for a scheme-based activitypub system, you could start looking at this (one that could be packaged and usable by the Guix enthusiast crowd, even):
https://gitlab.com/dustyweb/pubstrate/-/tree/master/
And the test suite:
https://gitlab.com/dustyweb/pubstrate/-/blob/master/pubstrate/aptestsuite.scm
The pubstrate repo is really three... no wait, four things:
- An ActivityStreams library
- An ActivityPub library
- An ActivityPub demo application
- An ActivityPub test suite
All of these were cobbled together by me under tremendous strain and without enough energy or support during the last year or so of the activitypub development process. There are, nonetheless, some good ideas in there, I think. It's probably not compatible with most current activitypub applications (and yes, that's an interesting piece of commentary itself), but it could be made so without too much work I think.
What might the history of biology look like when viewed through colonial and postcolonial encounters centered on spices? 🌶

i never did an #introduction on here, not even way back when, because i was kind of under the radar, tho not intentionally.
i’m Dan. i’m older than most – i was on the internet earlier than most of my contemporaries. that feels weird sometimes, partly because now the only people my age as steeped in the internet are people from my old career (technical operations & those who loved us) who were MUCH more successful, and partly because i often feel like i’m butting in on the digital natives.
i care a lot about healthy social networks and keeping spaces safe from fascists and hatemongers for marginalized groups. i am bad at it, but i think i’m getting a smidge better every day.
i’m from California, but now I live in Berlin working at a famous non-profit. i’m also an amateur novelist who does #nanowrimo every year. one of these days i’m going to finish one of them, and then you’ll all be sorry!
Day 22!
Looking for people who know things about coral.
Can old (think hundreds of years), dried out coral be destroyed by punching it with a fist? It's a branchy piece about the size of a loaf of bread. What if the fist belongs to a large and very strong human?
Would love boosts - thank you! :)
Happy 11/22/22 #NaNoWriMo22 writers! I hope
you got double your word out in on this doubled day, but if you didn't don't stress. You're nearing the end here and it's normal to feel exhausted or even bored with your story. But look at how much you've accomplished already this month! Be proud.
#nanowrimo word count over 45,000; home stretch!

@atomicpoet @suekearney #BlackMastodon #Desi #Indigenous #BlackTwitter (has its own instance btw), #NDN, #AfricanAmerican #BlackFedi, #asian #antiracist #BlackDiaspora are a few. It’s easier for me to speak about the Black ones. You kinda have to play around with them til you find people tooting. Also, go through #introduction and #IntroductionPost. Groups have also been made.
Reminder.
Facebook is still a big pile of steaming 💩!
“Major tax filing services such as H&R Block, TaxAct, and TaxSlayer have been quietly transmitting sensitive financial information to Facebook when Americans file their taxes online, The Markup has learned.
The data, sent through widely used code called the Meta Pixel, includes not only information like names and email addresses but often even more detailed information, including data on users’ income, filing status, refund amounts, and dependents’ college scholarship amounts.
This article was copublished with The Markup, a nonprofit newsroom that investigates how powerful institutions are using technology to change our society. Sign up for its newsletters here.
The information sent to Facebook can be used by the company to power its advertising algorithms and is gathered regardless of whether the person using the tax filing service has an account on Facebook or other platforms operated by its owner Meta.”

One reason I love creating #GenerativeArt is that it mixes two of my great loves in life - coding and creativity.
I've always enjoyed the creative side of programming. I used to do design work as part of the day job, but found the restrictions placed by clients somewhat frustrating!
So I gave that up to focus on the technical side of coding professionally, and left the creative side as a hobby - the best of both worlds!
