Enjoyed this article explaining the main reason are covered: to protect the important parts of the bridge from rotting (NOT, as I'd supposed, to keep the roadway free of ice and snow).

My picture shows the interior of our local one, the Covered Bridge, across the West River. Many of my summer bike rides take me here and beyond.

Who's ready for #NYE2022? This elaborate Victorian alarm clock prompted people to think about the shortness of life. When the alarm bell chimed, a small card running up the skeleton’s spinal column retracted to make the jaw open and the eyes roll.

Another ghost in the wilderness: Old abandoned farmhouse on the High Plains of North Dakota. The house is crumbling - the front porch has collapsed. There are no other properties for many miles around.

Hello Mastodon!

I'm a provenance researcher at a large public library in Berlin that's still full of Nazi-looted books. Posts will mainly be about stamps, bookplates, signatures and dedications, the life and death of the previous owners as well as the restitution of the books.

This #BlackFriday I thought I'd just post a photo of myself - enjoying a hot chocolate, while sporting a Ralph Lauren sweater featuring the famous Polo Bear who is *also* enjoying a hot chocolate 🙂

Who would have thought that adding a Sierpinski Triangle Fractal as musical notes would actually sound good!😅

#DYK that the forensic scientist Frances Glessner Lee created real crime scene dioramas to train homicide investigators in the 1940s/50s? She was troubled that patrolmen and detectives rarely knew how to secure a scene for the medical examiner, or identify key evidence that might prove useful in a forensic investigation. And so, she set out to create dioramas as educational tools.

She also helped found the first Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard when forensics was in its infancy.

Vintage remixing is one of my favorite things to do. I like to embellish, enhance and breathe new life into old works of art and get them circulating again!

This is my surrealist take on the original by Gustave Caillebotte released into the public domain by the AIC.

I call my version A Walk in the Rain.
