"Before creating slides, write down the main points you hope to communicate. These might include an overarching question, the reason that question is important, your key results and any remaining issues. Try to connect the points into a smooth half-page narrative with a beginning, a middle and an end."

I am an Emeritus Professor at the Fred Hutch in Seattle (i.e., retired). My lab studied host-pathogen interactions, especially how HIV adapted to humans and how HIV latency is controlled. I also taught a graduate level virology class for several decades. I hike, bike, and garden in the Pacific Northwest and looking to add other hobbies and activities.

PIEZO and NK cells
"However, the role of mechanosensing in regulating NK cell killing efficiency in physiologically relevant scenarios is poorly understood. In this study, we report that the responsiveness of NK cells is regulated by tumor cell stiffness. NK cell killing efficiency in 3D is impaired against softened tumor cells, while it is enhanced against stiffened tumor cells"

It's time to stop making t-SNE & UMAP plots. In a new preprint w/ Tara Chari we show that while they display some correlation with the underlying high-dimension data, they don't preserve local or global structure & are misleading. They're also arbitrary.🧵https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.08.25.457696v1

"Berthe Morisot, extraordinarily a footnote in Impressionist history until a decade ago, arrives at London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery for her first UK exhibition in 70 years. It’s a wonderfully sympathetic, intelligent, enlightening show, placing Morisot at the heart of French painting while allowing her individuality to shine."

'Here, we describe the molecular profile of a thermosensory neuron pair in C. elegans experiencing different temperature stimuli. We find that distinct salient features of the temperature stimulus, including its duration, magnitude of change, and absolute value, are encoded in the gene expression program in this single neuron type, and we identify a novel transmembrane protein and a transcription factor whose specific transcriptional dynamics are essential to drive neuronal, behavioral, and developmental plasticity.'

'Indeed, an anecdote that arose in antiquity paints exactly this picture: Dionysius, on the eve of the split, requested that Plato not speak ill of him back at the Academy, prompting Plato’s haughty reply: ‘May the gods forbid that we have any reason to speak of you at all.’'

'In this study, we show that reversal of methylation silencing of STING in murine melanoma cell lines using a clinically available DNA methylation inhibitor can improve agonist-induced STING activation and type-I IFN induction, which, in tumor-bearing mice, can induce tumor regression through a CD8+ T cell-dependent immune response.'

Question: does the pachyderm's (elephant) cerebellum also follow the proportionality rule with the cerebrum? I recall a commentary (Herculano-Houzel https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2022.01.058 ) on how the elephant's cerebellum is 96% of all brain cells, when normally it's "only" 80%, at least in primates.
