'Many art experts say Lichtenstein’s use of source comics was fair appropriation. Yet Eisman, 96, who lives in New Jersey, tells The Washington Post by email: “I’d say it’s theft.” He hopes people will watch the documentary and see it as evenhanded, intended to represent both sides with the aim to let “the viewers make up their own minds and not just leave it to the so-called experts.”

This strategy worked pretty well in Brazil, where they were referred to as 'sandwich PhDs'. The difficulty was providing good conditions for people to thrive locally after their PhDs. But it should also be noted that, in the case of the researchers who ultimately stayed or returned to institutions abroad, it also provided a great mentoring network for the next generation of students, as well as a valuable resource for the local scientific community through consortia, collaborations, reagent sharing, etc.
“Most PhDs focus on the individual, but in this programme, the focus was on building institutional capacity at Makerere,” Waiswa says. “The research you do was also meant to be aligned to national development priorities.”

@teixi Yes, that's one way of looking at it. Vaccines are a preventive measure, monoclonals are most likely to work early, and we have a very poor toolkit for serious disease. It may seem odd, but the reason is that for the monoclonal directly targets the virus, which is what you want in the acute phase; but the serious illness is much more complex - and not necessarily directly dependent on viral replication anymore. Excessive inflammation, occasional autoimmune issues and a variety of stress & damage responses are massive problems at that stage. It's why the first drugs to show any real clinical improvement were steroids and other immune modulators.
'But increasingly the American mortality anomaly, which is still growing, is explained not by the middle-aged or elderly but by the deaths of children and teenagers. One in 25 American 5-year-olds now won’t live to see 40, a death rate about four times as high as in other wealthy nations.'

TRIM21 is a fascinating molecule - it's basically an intracellular Fc receptor. Here, Mukadam et al show that it plays a role in antibody mediated prevention of tau protein aggregate formation in neurone.
The jump to MHC alleles without described ligands is a promising sign that MixMHC2pred-2.0 could be a powerful tool for both basic and clinical research. Very curious to see if other groups validate and adopt it.
"Within humans, our work revealed that MHC-II binding motifs and MHC-II ligands could be accurately predicted even for alleles without known ligands. This is an important improvement of MixMHC2pred-2.0 compared with MixMHC2pred-1.2 and NeonMHC2, which were not applicable to most patients and could not be included in our benchmarks."
