"Another busy week for Britain’s Ministry of Metaphor, as the country’s largest supplier of that luxury product “water” teeters on the brink of collapse."
'Tuberculosis (TB) is a heterogenous disease in humans with individuals exhibiting a wide range of susceptibility. This heterogeneity is not captured by standard laboratory mouse lines. We used a new collection of 19 wild-derived inbred mouse lines collected from diverse geographic sites to identify novel phenotypes during Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection.'

'São cerca de 52 mil estudantes com prestações atrasadas, dos quais quase 6000 já têm os seus processos entregues à Autoridade Tributária para cobrança coerciva.'
'In an uncanny anticipation of his subsequent reception history, Johannes Vermeer made one of his first appearances in the printed record in the guise of a phoenix, the mythical bird that regenerates itself from its own ashes.'

'In patients with resectable stage IIIA or IIIB NSCLC, perioperative treatment with nivolumab plus chemotherapy resulted in a higher percentage of patients with a pathological complete response and longer survival than chemotherapy alone.'

@mads100tist In Brazil it was worse, because what pulled up the far right was exactly the same as US: evangelical churches.
@mads100tist Yes, here they have their own Fox establishment, pulled by a rag called Observador trying to convince people that they have absurdly low salaries because of new pronoun use conventions.
@mads100tist Portugal is the same as Spain, the local PP, PSD, is also making nice with the far right.

1. A few months ago, @vtraag and @LudoWaltman@social.cwts.nlposted a superb paper to the arXiv.

I've been meaning to write about it for a while and finally found the time.
Copying Trump & Bolsonaro, the EU Far Right is now trying to dismantle environmental regulations.
'Pero esa apuesta de Vox también se materializa en promesas en los acuerdos con el PP que apuntan contra las políticas medioambientales que el partido ultra suele presentar como enemigas del campo'
Great to see a new wave of #Twittermigration, including many I think who relapsed.... welcome back! 😊
Here some low-tech tips:
- Use different #Hashtags, follow and search them. Eg I often do (random) country searches, always widens horizon
- check out people's pinned toots. You can pin several so a lot of 'top ware' there
- Be mindful that everything is real time, so go 'on', toot and boost at different times of day
- And check out #ClimateDiary !
'Bennett said the goal is to build a preclinical data package that shows efficacy across orthopoxviruses, which include mpox and smallpox, and then generate "robust" phase 1/2 data to inform dose selection and eventually licensure.'

'Even while I was saying that, though, it wasn't quite accurate - I mean, amphetamine (for one) definitely suppresses feeding behavior, just at a rather unacceptable cost in side effects. But for many years, that was the choice: a long list of things that didn't work, or a very short list of things that did but caused serious trouble along the way. The GLP-1 agonists are the first pharmacological class that seems to be breaking out of that dichotomy.'

My colleague Kevin Gross and I have a new preprint up on the arXiv.
Just for fun, rather than pure text simple text explainer, let's go some slides for a talk I'm giving at https://www.icssi.org/ tomorrow.
Here's the paper itself: Rationalizing risk aversion in science. https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.13816
Context: Ethiopia's civil war, among the worst of the 21st century, left over half a million dead between 2020 & 2022, and devastated the country's economy. Since a peace treaty signed in November 2022, the recovery process has been gradual. Civil war & military spending in the midst of bloodshed and famine, has the famished relying on foreign aid, but there are no concrete solutions for the country's economic woes, including its severe shortage of foreign currency.

'But the 25-year bet, at least, has been resolved: No one has found a clear neural correlate of consciousness. Dr. Koch ended the evening by carrying to the stage a wooden box full of wine. He pulled out a 1978 bottle of Madeira and gave it to Dr Chalmers.'
"Right now, a map from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre shows a country spotted red with blazes, like it’s come down with a nasty case of chicken pox. Remarkably, these fires aren’t clustered in a single region: Their spread is the northern equivalent of New York and California burning at the same time, with additional fires stretched in between. According to the CIFFC, more than 509 fires are active in Canada, 253 of which are classified as “out of control.”'
