Metaphors in science - know any?

I’m fascinated by the role that metaphors play in scientific discovery. Like Darwin’s “tree” of life. When we shift how we think about what we’re working on, sometimes it inspires us to see it in a whole new way that clicks.

Know any good accounts of metaphors in science - others or your own?

Brief #Introduction, since it seems to be the etiquette around here. Hi! I'm Mel, a PGR at QMUL researching abortion policy implementation in subnational Argentina, through lenses of various geographies, #policy and subnational studies, and literature on #feminist #activism. Expect toots both in #Spanish and #English. Alongside #academicchatter, expect pictures and commentary on #popculture, #cats, #nature and #food, as needed.

#NewStudy: “#COVID19 infection was associated with increased risk of diabetes. This risk persisted as the Omicron variant became predominant. Diabetes risk after COVID-19 infection was higher in unvaccinated than vaccinated patients, suggesting a benefit of vaccination” jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman

Hi new people! I'm Perry. I think a #reintroduction is probably in order.

I study the #evolution and #biodiversity of cave #insects to inform #conservation management, naming of species, resilience to #climatechange, & more. 🐛 🦗 🦋 🐞

I'm also interested in #neurodiversity in academia, #degrowth, #localism, and #climatejustice! 🏳️‍🌈 🌏 ☀️

'El primer caso documentado de un cáncer provocado por un agente externo fue, como usted recuerda en el documental, el de los deshollinadores de Londres. Ellos desarrollaron cáncer de escroto porque solían hacer sus necesidades sin lavarse las manos, y el hollín tenía agentes carcinógenos.'

'Mavericks, also known as Polintons, are unique because they share features of both transposons and viruses. Like transposons, Mavericks are flanked by terminal inverted repeats and can readily jump and insert into genomes. Like viruses, they code for a large number of proteins, including a type-B DNA polymerase, a retroviral-like integrase, as well as major and minor capsid proteins'

Big Journalism's abject capitulation to Musk, despite his loathing of their work and promotion of democracy's enemies, will not change unless he makes Twitter unusable.

Given the latest fail, perhaps practicality will prevail over honor.

But this would require work on the part of journalists and their employers. They may consider that to be an insurmountable barrier.

This is not good.

"Changes to the primary end point during or after recruitment were omnipresent in randomized clinical trials with immune checkpoint inhibitors for patients with UC, RCC, and NSCLC. Most common were switching to or adding OS as an outcome measure and subpopulations based on PD-L1 expression. Ultimately, published data often do not allow readers to infer what the results would have been if the primary outcome had not been changed."

Instead of the classic smell of burning wood in a fireplace or campfire, things are starting to smell more like burned plastic so what is going on? It turns out that when smoke stays in the air for prolonged periods of time, the UV radiation from the sun interacts with all the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to form even more toxic gases. 3/

Thank goodness #university tuition is free in #Scotland. The #Tories are engaged in class war, now showing their contempt for #students who don’t vote #Tory.

I haven’t been that active on the main timeline here, so a bit of an update on where I am at the moment: I’ve joined up with a partner and we are working towards a bigger company than just me, myself and I. The product of the company will be accurate anatomical models of animals. With the emphasis on accurate. At first mainly the animals used in biology education and later maybe other animals. We are teaming up with several scientists, in the Netherlands, Germany and more. 1/2

@cyrilpedia
Notwithstanding the caveats of mouse #TB models, that looks worth a read especially as it embraces heterogeneity of responses and outcomes.

Also, a new hashtag i should use more often! 😉 #hostpathogen

#preprint #tuberculosis #immunology #infectiousdisease

@gpollara Absolutely - but this should be taken into account together with 'rewinding' the microbiome studies et al to reconsider what are real, species/evolutionary differences between model organisms and humans and what are artefacts of hyper clean inbred strains
