'One study of 108 US urban areas found that formerly redlined neighbourhoods had surface temperatures about 2.6C, or nearly 5F hotter than others. “This is one of the most visible ways that we can see structurally racist decisions from the past play out today as climate risk,” says Max Cawley, who participated in a “heat mapping” project of Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina.'

Interesting when a black guest brought onto #FoxnewsSunday has to tell people that... unlike the impression Republicans give that 50% of #Harvard students are black... the actual number is that just 6.6% are black." #AffirmativeAction

The bearded pig is not the oddest part of this story.
"“Flowering and fruiting below ground is mind-boggling and seemingly paradoxical because they appear to prevent pollination and dispersal."
'Pelo meio temos um problema que é também uma urgência. Esta geração de cientistas de que nos orgulhamos vive em grande parte em situação de instabilidade contratual.'

'Zhang et al. provide crucial insights into the mechanisms driving the transition from the onset of autoimmunity to joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis. The findings emphasize the central role of myeloid monocytes that overexpress both RANK and TLR2, and the sialylation of TLR2 in driving the fusion of monocytes and consequent resorption of bone.'
'No federal regulations protect farmworkers—who are mostly noncitizen immigrants from Latin America, commonly live under the poverty line, and have few legal rights—from extreme heat. Farmworkers die from heat-related injuries at 20 times the rate of other laborers.'
"The new vaccine does not contain the live viruses that are in the polio vaccines currently used in some low- and middle-income countries. It adds what’s known as an inactivated polio component into a multifaceted shot that is already being used to protect young children against five other dangerous infections. A similar shot is already available in the United States and some European countries."
Historians will recognize the paranoid style, the long tradition of conspiracy fantasies and conspiracy communities. Good read on the dangerous one that’s metastasizing around a Kennedy: ”As politics, it’s a harmful fantasy; movements that promise to restore a halcyon era of national unity always are.” #politics #history #histodons https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/30/opinion/robert-f-kennedy-jr-coalition-supporters.html

Listen. My husband and I paid off all of our student debts the old fashioned way. When I heard younger people getting relief I could only think one thing:
Thank God someone noticed the huge negative impact debts have. It was one of the best things Biden did. And only fair considering PPP relief and bailout happened.
Going of your way to reverse what was *already settled* is spiteful. Especially when the PPP relief isn't even questioned.
SOCUTS is full of spite for ordinary people.
'It’s interesting that psychiatric hospitals are used as a cliche for “a situation of total chaos” – I think I’ve already mentioned the time when the director of a psych hospital I worked at told us, apparently without conscious awareness or irony, that if Obamacare passed our hospital would have too many patients and “the place would turn into a madhouse”.'

With people flooding in from the bird site today, let me post a quick introduction: Hi, I’m Jens, I’m not posting enough here, hope to do better in the future. My background is that I used to do the #science and now I’m just talking about it, in any way that I can imagine.
If you’re reading this, I think you’re cool.
@NicoleCRust War metaphors are the bane of immunology.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
