“I feel like the trajectory was, Goodreads was innovating and doing good things, it was exciting,” she said. “And then Amazon bought it. The end.”

Just a printed image of thousands of flies, ants, spiders and butterflies fighting in a battle with tiny weapons. You see part of an allegory of the struggles of a Protestant spider and a Catholic fly in sixteenth-century England.

The author, John Heywood, published the book in 1556: 456 pages, 98 chapters.

The story: A fly named Buz gets caught in a spider web, and starts arguing with a spider about Catholics and Protestants. In the end this leads to a battle.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a green zone, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.

So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a #phd too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?

Could you help me find as many PhD researchers as possible?

'Finally, and most recently, we have become interested in understanding the interactions of Toxoplasma with mucus. When you ingest Toxoplasma, it has to get through the , cross the mucous layer, get to the epithelium, cross the epithelium, find its way into the blood, and then into the brain and skeletal muscles. But I never really paused and thought about the impact of mucus on that initial infection until I taught . And so, now I'm interested in looking at the interaction of with goblet cells.'

For anyone whose recently joined us here on Mathstodon, you should be aware of @MathsJam, the monthly pub nights (and also annual gatherings) for recreational mathematics, and also @TMiP (Talking Maths in Public), the network for people who communicate maths to the public or otherwise. Also, hi!

"In this study, we provide a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship among these cellular subsets, uncover a novel homeostatic function in human NK cells, and illuminate how HIV-1 infection disrupts these cellular subsets and their functions"

'In a staggering report last month, the Department of Justice documented pervasive abuse, illegal use of force, racial bias and systemic dysfunction in the Minneapolis Police Department. City police officers engaged in brutality or made racist comments, even as a department investigator rode along in a patrol car.'

I respect the NYT, but this the laziest, stupidest reporting imaginable.

The majority of the story is just regurgitating Musk’s PR statements unchallenged, without context.

And it doesn’t go into issues like the Google cloud infrastructure bill. Or the self DDOS.

A decade ago, I could excuse thin tech reporting from major papers.

But most other newsrooms have staffed up experts enough to write better stories. WSJ certainly has.

"The Outer Hebrides Palimpsest. (Edinburgh, Scotland, 1677).

Following the establishment of the Man in the Iron Mask’s identity by use of the correspondence and shopping lists of his jailor, Saint Mars, the Margrave embarked on a reanalysis of one his cartographic collection’s most celebrated collection items, the Outer Hebrides Palimpsest. The connection was tenuous at best: a group of Waldensians fleeing the brutal suppression of the sect in Piedmont arrived at the remote islands at around the time the map was produced. In keeping with our founder’s original mission, the process arrived at no useful conclusions – one unfortunate effect is the damage you see here, the Margrave's effort at redacting the map."

"That's a long-winded way of explaining how I got from working on stress to being interested in the microbiome. The next 10 years were focused on taking advantage of advances in technologies, genetics and sequencing to parse the relationship between the microbiome and the brain and, more recently, on asking if we can translate it to humans."

'To identify tumor-intrinsic drivers of resistance, we quantified in-vitro response to CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor T-cells (CD19-CAR) and bispecific antibodies (BsAb) across 46 B-NHL cell lines and measured their proteomic profiles at baseline. Among the proteins associated with poor in-vitro response was Serpin B9, an endogenous granzyme B inhibitor.'
