'I had repeatedly heard, “Immunology will never be a therapy for cancer patients.” Then Jim Allison started presenting patients who were responding to anti–CTLA-4, and all of a sudden, we went from night to day.'

Dr. Kristian Andersen has a firey opening statement for the COVID Inquisition this week.
It's really very clear, thoughtful, and detailed in its deconstruction of pretty much the whole web of conspiracy theories. Also very accessible.
Highly recommend reading it.

'This stage was reached in the early forties, i.e., at the time when Oswald T. Avery and his collaborators began to work on the transformation of pneumococci, and Delbruck and Luria on the phages of E. coli, although Avery's laboratory was much more receptive to the application of chemistry than was the other group. It is really with Avery that there began what I have called, in my title, the chemical education of genetics. It is, perhaps, characteristic of the way in which science operates that the educator was neither a geneticist nor a chemist. The learning process was slow and weary: the card-carrying members of the guild and their assorted acolytes refused as long as possible, and even beyond that point, to take cognizance.'
I've uploaded our BBS paper on "proxy failure" — analogues of Goodhart's Law across scales ranging from molecular biology to neuroscience to business to ecology — on ResearchGate.

#OTD 10 July 1985 The Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior is bombed and sunk in Auckland harbour by French DGSE agents, killing Fernando Pereira.
'Here we find that, in addition to suppressing appetite, GDF15 counteracts compensatory reductions in energy expenditure, eliciting greater weight loss and reductions in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) compared to caloric restriction alone.'
The #Dutch #government does the only sensible thing and no longer wants to use a commercial actor like #Twitter. They installed their own #Mastodon #instance on social.overheid.nl . Of course! They have their own e-mail service, it's only logical you have your own micro-blogging/information service as well. 🙌🏼👏🏼
A re #introduction: I'm a PhD scientist-turned-journalist, now a reporting fellow @STAT News, where I'm covering #biotech for the next 1.5 mo.
I've also covered and am interested in #healthcare, #AI, #PFAS, the #NIH and #science / #research

@xtaldave I think you have to number these as part of a series
"Of the 42 #pregnancy associated deaths the committee analyzed between 2018 and 2021, all but one – or 98% – were found to be preventable."
Elect enough politicians of the kind that now call themselves "Republican" and this kind of thing will happen more and more: Ban this, ban that, ban practically anything to demonstrate they are Tough-Minded and In-Control-of-Everything. If they were also efficient, they would skip ahead, stop calling themselves "Republican" and finally, accurately call themselves "Fascist". https://bookriot.com/hoopla-overdrive-libby-now-banned-for-those-under-18-in-mississippi/
@embojournal Should there then be a clear correlation to #microbiome composition and short fatty acid concentrations in patients? Is this data out there already? @cyrilpedia @gpollara @EMIL_DKFZ @dkfz
#Neurology @thelancet Earlier menopause refers to menopause that occurs before the median age of natural menopause (age 50 years) & premature menopause refers to menopause that occurs before age 40 years. Emerging shreds of evidence indicated that earlier menopause, particularly premature menopause, irrespective of its spontaneous or surgery-induced nature, might be associated with increased risks of #cardiovasculardiseases, #sleepdisorders, #psychiatricdiseases ( #dementia )& other sequelae.
@thelancet Most of these findings implicated an oestrogen deficit mechanism leading to tissue or organ dysfunctions
