Hi #ScienceMastodon, I'm happy to share with you the last Research Highlight from JCS Issue 15. Paul Gleeson and colleagues from the University of Melbourne and Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn use blood outgrowth endothelial cells to map out the intracellular trafficking route of human serum albumin.

'HIV is the easy part now — it’s all the aging stuff that’s coming up, but we hit those markers earlier than people who are not living with HIV. We’re classified as the silver generation, because we’re really the first generation of long-term survivors. So a lot of this is new to everybody. It’s new to the patients, it’s new to the providers. So we have to take a step back every now and then just realize we’re all learning this together.'

'But income inequality within countries is rising, as measured by the Gini index, a measure of income distribution across a population. Globally, in the 15 years to 2019, economic output in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) roughly doubled, but the share of economic output earned by the workers producing the goods and services behind the increase fell from 54.1% in 2004 to 52.6% in 2019.'

“Companies don’t like the term trial and error,” said Dr. Daniel Drucker, who studies diabetes and obesity at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute in Toronto and who consults for Novo Nordisk and other companies. “They like to say, ‘We were extremely clever in the way we designed the molecule,” Dr. Drucker said.
But, he said, “They did get lucky.”

“..CNS symptoms occur between 0 days and 4 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection.” Most common CNS symptoms: Memory deficits, unresponsiveness, mental and behavioural disorders. “Seven of 12 cases can be categorized as probable SARS-CoV-2 encephalitis, and 5 cases can be described as brainstem encephalitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis or tremor probably associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection” https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00415-023-11912-x

'Una nueva investigación, llevada a cabo por expertos del Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center de Nueva York y de la Universidad de Zurich ha encontrado un obstáculo añadido a esta difícil ecuación: “el sobreprecio” o “la prima” del cáncer (”the cancer premium”, en inglés).“'
"Mass death has long been normalized on Europe’s borders. More than 27,800 people have died or disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea since 2014 — and that is most likely a large underestimate. This year is shaping up to be especially deadly."

“The algorithm-based approaches that people are taking are suboptimal,” says Drew Hannaman, head of R&D at Ichor Medical Systems, which obtained an empirical neoantigen selection platform after Genocea’s bankruptcy last year. “[Algorithm-based approaches] are pretty good at identifying a property that is necessary to generate immune response. But they are not comprehensive enough to identify the properties that are necessary and sufficient.” The result, Hannaman says, is “a lot of false positives”.
Hi, I'm a #SystemsNeuroscientist at #KISNeuro in #Trondheim #Norway. Just moving over from another server.
I'm here to learn about exciting new science, explore topics loosely related to my own work, and connect with new people. I particularly like the "big" conversations about (neuro)science here that don't occur often enough in the lab.
Madrid vermuterias:
"Two gentlemen, in suits and hats, one with a cane, sat next to each other at the far end of the bar. They looked dressed from an era when people didn’t wear T-shirts and never left the house without a hat.
“I have been sitting in this seat every day for 50 years,” said Jaime, 91."

'Predatory publishers step into this void and accustom uninformed researchers to scientific publishing that is fast and obstacle-free. Once hooked, some authors keep going back to these predatory journals, confusing speed with quality. “OMICS is open access, relatively straightforward and timely. Much less of a hassle and less arrogant than old-school society journals,” one survey respondent wrote.'
'Mark Carrigan, a digital sociologist at the Manchester Institute for Education, UK, argues that the idea that Twitter helped democratize academia “was a bit simplistic” because social media created a space where academic celebrities thrived.'
