Sure would be swell if #government could spin up some internal #Mastodon instances for alerts, weather notifications, public safety announcements, and public statements...
Just sayin...
"Within the confines of the traditional clinical research model, studying novel treatments for rare cancer subtypes is challenging — particularly with respect to patient engagement, financial burden and timeliness. In this issue of Nature Medicine, Liu et al. describe a novel trial design that positions the patient at the focal point of clinical investigation, while exploring the safety and efficacy of first-line pyrotinib in patients with metastatic HER2+ NSCLC"

Meanwhile, in Portugal, one cant go to Madrid by train anymore & all the ruling parties debate is where to put a new airport.
"The Italian state-owned train operator is aiming to launch high-speed rail services between some of Europe’s biggest cities as it takes advantage of the liberalisation of the region’s network."

'Moutinho says that, to score a 5, the Lula administration needs to enable more effective surveillance and control of deforestation in all biomes. The government should also act quickly to give a ‘legal status’ to untitled public lands, especially in the Amazon and Cerrado'
More than 26,000 forced to flee as Tenerife wildfire rages.
The huge blaze, which originally broke out late Tuesday in a mountainous northeastern area of the island, is the 'most complex fire' to hit Spain's Atlantic Canary Islands in more than 40 years, the authorities say.
I'm sorting out some of my old film stuff from childhood... Here's an original, U-rated UK cinema quad poster for Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack (1979). A strange time in cinema history when episodes of American TV shows (in this case, 3 episodes) were re-edited into feature-length films and released in UK cinemas, often during the school holidays.

'In fact, it was. I recently obtained and analyzed a dataset used by Meta to train LLaMA. Its contents more than justify a fundamental aspect of the authors’ allegations: Pirated books are being used as inputs for computer programs that are changing how we read, learn, and communicate. The future promised by AI is written with stolen words.'

'I was drawn to #neuroscience for the same reasons that I was drawn to writing. I wanted to learn about consciousness; I hoped that my studies would lead to a deeper understanding of my own inner life and others’. I hoped that memorizing the molecular weight of loneliness might save me from it.'

'These results suggest that hyperactivity of both mTORC1 and mTORC2 are sufficient to cause epilepsy, and that targeted therapies should aim to reduce activity of both complexes.'

'Hay una falta de escrúpulos en cómo tratan la verdad. Joseph Goebbels, el gran jefe de la propaganda nazi, era un maestro de distorsionarla, pero esto ha ido más allá con los populistas de hoy. En cierto modo, no creen que la verdad como tal exista, y esto es muy preocupante, porque hoy en día tenemos redes sociales, y es así como difunden sus mentiras.'

Some takeaways:
- There was noise in 2014; there's noise now. Conference growth hasn't changed this much.
- Spotlights/orals are especially noisy. Being more selective would make decisions more arbitrary.
- The amount of noise in which papers get flagged for ethics review is also striking.
'Although infection and these translocated effector proteins are restricted to intestinal epithelial cells (IEC), type I dendritic cells (cDC1) were required to generate CD8+ T cell responses to these model antigens.'
"These rankings are not, to borrow a phrase, merely academic matters. Funding agencies, including many governments, use them to decide where to award grants. Citations are the currency of academic success, but their value also attracts more money and resources to institutions and academics."
'WVU, West Virginia’s flagship land-grant university, which is located in the small city of Morgantown on the state’s northern border with Pennsylvania, is rushing to eliminate 9 percent of its majors (32 programs in total), all foreign language programs, and 16 percent of full-time faculty members (169 in total) in response to a $45 million budget deficit for the fiscal year 2024.'
