Gaiman: " If you really can't figure out which political party or which politician to vote for, just ask if they're on the side of libraries. Are they voting to fund their libraries? Are they voting to keep them free? Then vote for those guys. They're probably the good guys. And by the same token, the book burners, the book banners, they're probably the bad guys."

Why People Vote Against Redistributive Policies That Would Benefit Them thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/why

"Findings show experimentally that simply making respondents think about immigrants in a randomized manner before asking them questions about redistribution lowers support for redistribution."

"A lack of information about the level or rise of inequality does not seem to be the culprit for the lack of support for redistribution."

I'd like to be snarky about this, but it's sad to watch #Twitter's slow death. That stupid, beautiful site has been vital to me in my development as a poet. And as someone who can probably be described as Very Online, I used to find the site good in a bunch of other ways as well. But at some point, you have to go. He's deleting old tweets to save a bit of money on storage space. And meanwhile, all the tweets on the Arab Spring, the Mumbai attacks, etc, are gone. They're just...gone.

@CellySally use of ELN is not mandated at our place, but a solution is offered for groups that want it. Institutes that I know have mandated have given some choice to labs as to what platform to use. I can see issues if a platform was mandated because inevitably some labs would not like it.

I don’t think short term researchers using ELNs is really a problem.

Interested to hear views on the value/danger of mandating institute-wide common digital lab notebook tech

Problems I can see:

- complexity is important for some groups, but gives intolerably steep learning curve for groups who host short-term researchers.

- Tie-in to a commercial ecosystem that might degrade or raise costs. DIY options (as championed by @steveroyle) therefore ideal for some groups, but not not feasible for others.

Pros: SOPs. Am doubtful about the value of this, am I wrong?

Trenitalia eyes up the Paris-Brussels-Amsterdam route, currently only served by Thalys (they're also considering Paris-Barcelona, in competition with SNCF & potentially Renfe) ft.com/content/7ccb3037-64f8-4

"From a genomic perspective, the majority of post-Black Death strains of Yersinia pestis thus far identified in Europe display diversity accumulated over a period of centuries that form a terminal sub-branch of the Y. pestis phylogeny. It has been debated if these strains arose from local evolution of Y. pestis or if the disease was repeatedly reintroduced from an external source."

'Se aprofundarmos e detalharmos a informação disponível, temos que 66% dos trabalhadores ganham abaixo dos 1000 euros mensais e 27% ganham entre 1000 e 2499 euros. Apenas 4% ganham entre 2500 e 4999 euros. Acima dessa remuneração, estão apenas 0,7% dos trabalhadores.'

From heat waves and wildfires to downpours and flooding, 2023 has given us a taste of the impacts we can expect over the coming decades and centuries.

Without very significant reductions in greenhouse gases—beginning immediately—it is very likely that global surface temperatures will exceed the 1.5C threshold set in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

10 facts that prove the world is in a climate emergency.

Inexcusable.

"The UN has backed a Home Office-funded pilot that would dramatically reduce the spiralling costs of the crisis-hit asylum system – yet Suella Braverman is refusing to endorse the scheme, despite it being described as 'more humane'."

Charles Darwin first publishes his theory of evolution through natural selection in The Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London, alongside Alfred Russel Wallace's same theory #OTD in 1858.

Darwin emphasised competition between individuals of the same species to survive & reproduce, whereas Wallace emphasised environmental pressures on varieties & species forcing them to become adapted to their local conditions, leading populations in different locations to diverge.

"Humanity has a decision to make. We stand today at the brink of a new age, at a fork in the road of our own survival. We can become another extinct species, a blink in time in the natural history of the earth, or we can recognize that water is so vital to our continued existence that we must find a new way to live with it, manage it, and protect it."
