“White folks would rather lose the war than give up the luxury of race prejudice,” Roy Wilkins of the NAACP argued in 1942. The navy, he said, “would rather not have a vital radio message get through than to have it sent by Black hands or over equipment set up by Black technicians.”

Number of #LongCOVID Cases Could Be Vastly Underestimated

“new research suggests that may be an underestimate and that far more people may be suffering from long #COVID without ever having tested positive for the virus. Researchers found a significant proportion of patients in their small study who had never tested positive for COVID-19 but who were having symptoms of long COVID nevertheless showed evidence of immune responses consistent with previous exposure.”

'When Mark Basa needed his next dose of Wegovy, he worked his way down a list of 10 CVS stores within a 25-mile radius of his Peekskill, N.Y., home — and struck out at every one. In the 10 weeks he couldn’t find the drug, he regained the eight pounds he had lost on the medication, and his blood sugar rose. He felt himself get out of breath more often. His shirts fit tighter.'

Following on from Friday's numbers substack post, I've just done a dive into all the data we used to have about Covid and what it meant.

Hopefully useful when considering what's coming out of the Inquiry about decisions in 2020! We knew a lot!

'However, the connection between phase separation and RTK-driven tumorigenesis is only now beginning to be appreciated. In this opinion article we focus on recent studies linking LLPS and RTK signalling. We provide insight into the possibility of LLPS playing a general role in RTK-driven signalling, especially in cancer, and introduce the prognostic opportunity represented by identification of features of LLPS in patients.'

"One of my hobbies is reading really old scientific papers. When I realized that uridine in RNA sets off immune cells, resulting in inflammation and interferon production, I wondered whether anyone had noticed this before. So I went back to the literature. Sure enough, I found a 1963 paper in which the authors reported that RNA isolated from mammalian cells does not induce the production of interferon (5). However, when the RNA was treated with nitrous acid, which deaminates all of the cytidines to uridines, it induced interferons. It gave me great pleasure to see that these researchers had stumbled upon this observation years before."

"And in evolutionary terms, species don’t really get a harder problem than the one we have to deal with: Human beings are really, really bad at reproducing ourselves. Even today, with modern medical interventions, our pregnancies and births—and, as a result, our postpartum recoveries—are longer, harder, and more prone to crippling complications than they are for most other primates."

'In this study, we investigate the role of microbiota-derived acetate in the regulation of O-GlcNAcylation and HCC progression under high fructose consumption. We report that fructose promotes HCC progression by enhancing O-GlcNAcylation via microbiota-derived acetate.'

'Disinformation campaigns — some armed with AI-generated deepfakes — are likely to be rampant in the coming months, says Ulrike Klinger, who studies political communication at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany. “And we cannot monitor them because we don’t have access to data.”

'RNA’s fleeting nature isn’t a big problem for a vaccine: it needs to encode proteins only for a short time to trigger an immune response. But for most therapeutic applications, it would be much better to have RNA that could stick around for longer.'

Amazon and other online retailers will start charging customers in France a minimum delivery fee of €3 when ordering books online from Saturday when a new law comes into effect to support independent booksellers.

Before, Amazon charged a single euro cent for delivery.

The measure aims to give independent booksellers a fighting chance at competing with big tech companies like Amazon.

Bernd has been pushing this point for a while, and I think he is right. Self correction is an important part of the scientific process and journals, funders, and institutions need to do more to encourage it.

'What can journals do to support both self-correction by authors and by the community? We have discussed this matter for a decade at EMBO Press, culminating in a workshop that recommended to make an explicit distinction between an author initiated- and an externally initiated- or even forced retraction. We use the term “withdrawal” for the former and reserve “retraction” for the latter.'
