'Filho’s native city of Recife has also been subject to similar remodellings, as shown in the second and third parts here, through the decline of its cinema houses. As they fall into dereliction, it feels like a form of collective dementia, robbing its citizens of a shared cultural continuity.'

I second Mark Kermode: Ken Loach's Land & Freedom (1995) is a superb film.

Watch it if you have the chance.

🇫🇷 The French welfare agency uses an algorithm to detect potential fraudsters. Every month, it ranks the households of 32 million people, including 13 million children, with a "risk score".

For the first time, @LaQuadrature obtained its source code and could run it.

The criteria that increase the risk score are
- being poor,
- living in a poor neighborhood,
- being a single mother,
- being unemployed,
- having a disability.

Human rights activist and Scientist Rebellion co-founder Mike Lynch-White was imprisoned ten months ago for peacefully disrupting a factory providing weapons to Israel. In his own words, "the world has watched a genocide in slow motion."

Mike was arrested at the UK border in February and was sentenced to 23 months in prison in May for criminal damage after climbing onto the roof of Runcorn-based factory APPH. He received a longer sentence due to previous climate-related actions.

"When Claudia Goldin received her Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, she was only the third woman to receive the award after Esther Duflo (2019) and Elinor Ostrom (2009). It was the first time in the history of the 54-year-old prize that women held more Nobels in economics than the uncles of Larry Summers (Paul Samuelson and Kenneth Arrow). An anecdote, but it illustrates the level of representation of women in economics."

Listen to Univision anchor Jorge Ramos. He charged that his network gave too friendly an interview with Trump, and in so doing it “put in doubt the independence of our news department.” Ramos added that Univision cannot “offer Trump an open microphone to broadcast his falsehoods and conspiracy theories." Let it be a warning to all news media.

“Orchids have interested me as much as almost anything in my life,” Darwin wrote. In their forms, he saw a vast landscape of the forces of selective evolution, a dance they played with their environment and their pollinators. “My little darlings,” as he sometimes referred to orchids, became his model for further exploring the forces he so broadly described in The Origin of Species. Just three years after the publication of that shattering work, he had produced his tome puzzling over the multitudinous, striking habits of orchids: On the Various Contrivances by Which British and Foreign Orchids Are Fertilised by Insects, and On the Good Effects of Intercrossing.'

'What went wrong? It isn’t that the past 25 years of consciousness studies haven’t been productive. The field has been incredibly rich, with discoveries and applications that seem one step from science fiction. The problem is that, even with all these discoveries, we still haven’t identified any neural correlates of consciousness. That’s why Koch lost the bet.'

It's difficult to explain how great the original Netflix DVD service was - how much better than instantly streaming Vin Diesel it was to be able to get in a day or two anything from the Criterion Collection, for example.
