Why #AI is a disaster for the #climate - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/dec/23/ai-chat-gpt-environmental-impact-energy-carbon-intensive-technology "Amid all the hysteria about ChatGPT and co, one thing is being missed: how energy-intensive the technology is" - yes, this is the real threat to humanity, not AI taking over...
"Using a dataset representing disease and phenotype co-occurrence in social media text, we employ semantic techniques to identify phenotype associations for a set of common and rare diseases, constituting a phenotype model for those diseases that represents the public perspective"

Yeah, I've also dabbled and get a lot of dross.
You also get the feel of running against the algorithm headwind when you don't have many followers. My posts are almost completely ignored (even generic ones with a nice photo), whereas on Mastodon they stand half a chance of getting some comments and replies.
We finally managed to publish an English version of the volcanic hazard map for #Grindavik
Out of all the map I´ve made at the Icelandic Met Office this series of hazard maps is the biggest one yet in terms of impact, internal discussion, public discussion and weight it bears and all the decision that are made based on it. I see this map all over the internet, TikTok, YouTube thumbnails, Facebook, you name it. There is probably enough material for an extended conference talk just about this map

"In 2021, Gemaque and several other women from her community were invited to take part in a chocolate-making workshop organised by the Amazonian chocolatier César De Mendes. Inspired by the experience, eight of them got together to form the Cacao Guardians. What began as an experiment in someone’s kitchen is now a registered business with an artisanal factory that produces 130kg of chocolate a month."
Latest #Brexit bonus.
"Not only are the British negotiators getting nowhere fast on the terms of a comprehensive trade deal with Canada, but the UK’s attempts to at least extend a rollover of the EU terms of trade on cheese exports have been squarely rejected by their Canadian counterparts."

I've blocked the whole domain. Their business model and my interests are orthogonal.
I follow about 50 accounts on Threads, mostly science and tech, and post occasionally about science and tech.
Yet, this is what the Threads algorithm thinks is of interest to me.
So far Threads has been 100% useless. Looks like I’m not the only one, judging from @reichenstein‘s posts of his experience.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
