…some dreams, like the dream of a complete scientific account of human consciousness, might be too difficult…and impossibly remote. In this case, we have the unhappy result of witnessing the inexorable creep of computation—computing existing theories—into science and everywhere else…

George Bellows. Rain on the River, 1908.
We often cannot see the tipping points coming, the black ice, the lightning strikes, infections, betrayals - the sudden pivots which alter everything forever, from normal to irretrievable. Just a few years after this Hudson River scene, the promising young American artist painted some of the most psychotically gruesome images of WW1, and then not long after that died at 42.
"Greta Livraria’s small space masks its big ambitions. Since opening earlier this year, the bookstore in Lisbon has dedicated its space entirely to promoting a group that has, for the most part, been overlooked and undervalued by society: female authors."
It's interesting; most of the classic bell-shaped curves don't arise purely do to susceptible depletion as predicted by the SIR model. This is true even for the plague example in the original SIR model, as Bacaër (2012) noted.

"JN.1, which emerged from the variant BA.2.86 and was first detected in the United States in September, accounted for 44 percent of Covid cases nationwide by mid-December, up from about 7 percent in late November, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

One of these epidemic curves is unlike all the others
Carl Bergstrom and Bill Hanage in PNAS today explain why

"Among the enduring riddles of American exceptionalism is the absence in the political mainstream of an overtly socialist party. Whereas in Europe socialist and social democratic parties emerged to tame the excesses of private enterprise, the much rawer, more carelessly exploitative forms of capitalism found in the United States failed to provoke a political response of a similar character or on anything like the same scale. The paltry 6 per cent of the popular vote won in the 1912 election by Eugene Debs remains the best performance by a Socialist Party presidential candidate."

"La Agencia Europea del Medicamento (EMA, en sus siglas en inglés) ha decidido suspender la comercialización en la UE de cientos de fármacos genéricos al tener dudas sobre la credibilidad de los datos de los ensayos clínicos que los respaldan, realizados en India por la empresa Synapse Labs."
“Humans were never meant to exist in a society that contains 2 billion individuals, and if you consider that #Instagram is a society in some twisted definition…of course they’re going to fail.
Here’s the good news. We’re in a rare moment when a shift may be possible; the previously intractable systems and #platforms are showing that they can be changed and moved, and something new could actually grow."

This bit is quite shocking
"Despite the flippant observation – often made by European officials – that Russia’s economy is the same size as that of Italy, the Kremlin is producing more shells than all of Nato. "

"The most important challenge is that of fairness or “linguistic justice”. A common language is a bit like a telephone network: the more people know a language, the more useful it becomes to communicate. The question of fairness arises because individuals face very different costs to access the network and are on an unequal footing when using it. Those who learn English as a second language incur learning costs, while native speakers can communicate with all network members without incurring such costs. It’s like getting the latest smartphone model and sim card with unlimited data for free."
"Irreproducible experiments, projects that failed to meet their goals, datasets we collected but never managed to analyze, and freezers full of unusable samples have taught us the hard way lessons that have led to these 10 simple rules for managing laboratory information."

Macrophages are essential immune cells that reside in all tissues. Some macrophages arise from monocytes in the blood, but during fetal development they also come from a unique pathway!
We still have a lot to learn, but here I'll describe how Zhao et al. (2023) used mouse models to uncover hints about which progenitor cells create tissue-macrophages.
