'The researchers combined temperature data from high-resolution satellite sources with weekly counts of all-cause mortality, by sex and age group from 2015 to 2022 Notably, the burden of heat-related mortality fell heavily on women and older people, reflecting a pressing need for interventions specifically designed to protect these groups.'

@cyrilpedia I enjoy the sealed sphere with the aquatic ecosystem that has been cut off from the outside world for 50 years or so and still functions and supports multicellular life

I took almost six years to finish my #phd

My advisor moved from US to UK in my third year.

The nobel laureate on my committee was, shall we say, fastidious, but in a dogmatic way, requiring thesis edits ad nauseam.

Fortunately, my to be post doc advisor hired me before finishing, so at least I wasn’t living in poverty while I finished.

If you were Black and woke up in NYC on Monday, July 13, 1863, things got terrifying quick. For Black New Yorkers, there was no reprieve. Black life was dispensable to white mobs & law authorities. The Civil War, poverty, & rabid racism in 19th-century New York explains the events of that week. For Black Americans, the NYC Draft Riots were a heinous episode in an already brutal age. But it didn’t happen in a vacuum.

The American Museum of Natural History is one of my favourite places - it was great to visit again, crowds & all. When we lived in New York, I was a volunteer at the museum - I recommend the program to anyone living in the city (you don't have to be a scientist, in my group there was everything from lawyers to bodega owners).

'Sex-specific splicing is an essential process that regulates sex determination and drives sexual dimorphism. Yet, how early in development widespread sex-specific transcript diversity occurs was unknown because it had yet to be studied at the genome-wide level. We use the powerful Drosophila model to show that widespread sex-specific transcript diversity occurs early in development, concurrent with zygotic genome activation. We also present a new pipeline called time2splice to quantify changes in alternative splicing over time.'

“Map 7 & 8. The la Motte-Husson Portolan (Mayenne, France, 17th Century)

If, as Arthur Robinson wrote in his Elements of Cartography, “maps are to be looked at while charts are to be worked on”, then portolans are the quintessential charts, navigational guides that do not wrestle with other aspects of representation. The Margrave was ecstatic when he acquired the la Motte-Husson Portolan, believing that it would finally allow him to contribute to the defense of the nation. Over time a confusing series representing the same location emerged, with shifting sailing directions. Exhaustive archival investigation revealed that the Baglion de la Dufferie family had the series of prints made to mark the different routes used by the toy sailboats of the Dauphin (the future Louis XIII) to cross the moat of their home in Mayenne, the Chateau de la Motte-Husson. This discovery made thirty years after the series was acquired precipitated a severe depression – it was the reason von Willebrand chose to recuperate in the Kaiserslautern spa where he ultimately expired.”

'My discomfort grew as everyone else gave their answers. When my turn came, I swallowed and said I was in my sixth year. “I think if someone takes more than 5 years the student is the problem,” the speaker replied tersely. I was devastated.'

'We developed Complementarity-Driven Deferral to Clinical Workflow (CoDoC), a system that can learn to decide between the opinion of a predictive AI model and a clinical workflow. CoDoC enhances accuracy relative to clinician-only or AI-only baselines in clinical workflows that screen for breast cancer or tuberculosis (TB).'

#IDMastodon #Viralimmunity #Immunology At least 20% of people who become infected with the #SARSCoV2 infection never feel sick. Now scientists have identified a genetic mutation that is linked to a higher likelihood of avoiding symptoms during infection.
