'Imitating each hormone individually can lead to weight loss, Tschöp says. But together, they work synergistically to keep each other in check. GIP activation suppresses GLP-1 activation’s side effects, and both of these hormone copycats stimulate insulin, preventing glucagon from raising blood glucose too high.'

"Gov. DeSantis’ threat to ‘start slitting throats’ of federal employees is dangerous, disgusting, disgraceful, and disqualifying,” says AFGE President Everett Kelly. “No federal employee should face death threats from anyone, least of all from someone seeking to lead the U.S. government.” https://www.govexec.com/management/2023/08/desantis-vows-start-slitting-throats-federal-workers-day-one-presidency/389093/
'Most people who cast a ballot in the 2016 election voted against Trump for president. But in the American system, not all votes are equal. Instead, the rules of the Electoral College gave a small fraction of voters in a few states decisive say over who would win the White House. The will of the majority of the people as a whole — or at least the majority of those who went to the polls — meant nothing compared with the will of a select few who, for reasons not too distant from chance, could decide the election.'

According to the UN’s most recent climate assessment, temperatures today are on average higher than at any time in at least the last 100,000 years.
Given the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of land over the course of a century or so has pushed the climate beyond anything known by human civilisation, that is a long way from being meaningless.

"This study highlighted a primordial PD-L1/BTLA coinhibitory axis that regulates CD8+ T cell activation in teleost fish and may act as an alternative to the PD-L1/PD-1 axis in mammals. It also revealed a previously unrecognized strategy for E. tarda immune evasion by inducing CD8+ T cell tolerance to target Mϕ cells through eliciting the PD-L1/BTLA checkpoint pathway."

Stuff I never learned in my History classes. And depending on where you lived, other states lied about this history.

"...I would get so mad at dudes I knew that downplayed the confederate flag, until I realized that their textbooks literally lied about the reasons for the civil war!
Showing them the articles of secession blew their mind. Some stopped rocking the flag.
Imagine how much less racist the US would feel if 10% of all confederate flags just disappeared."
What is mind/brain reductionism, in practice?
In Kandel's 2005 book, he lays out 5 tenants to "outline an intellectual framework designed to align current psychiatric thinking and training of future practitioners with modern biology". I regard this as a good snapshot of the "reductionism" that many quibble with, as it is practiced by the neuroscientists who adopt it. Would anyone disagree (either that this is reductionism or that this is a good snapshot of it?). Here are the principles.
Principle 1. All mental processes derive from operations of the brain.
Principle 2. Genes and their proteins are important determinants of the pattern of interconnections between neurons and how neurons function.
Principle 3. Alerted genes do not, by themselves, explain all of the variance of a given major mental illness. Social or developmental factors also contribute very importantly. Just as combinations of genes contribute to behavior, including social behavior, so can behavior and social factors exert actions on the brain by feeding back upon it to modify the expression of genes and thus the function of nerve cells. Learning, including learning that results in dysfunctional behavior, produces alterations in gene expression. Thus all of "nurture" is ultimately expressed as "nature".
Principle 4. Alternations in gene expression induced by learning give rise to changes in patterns of neuronal connections. These changes ... are responsible for initiating and maintaining abnormalities of behavior that are induced by social contingencies.
Principle 5. Insofar as psychotherapy or counseling is effective and produces long-term changes in behavior, it presumably does so through learning, by producing changes in gene expression ...

"COVID-19 mRNA vaccination in pregnant people aids in preventing maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection and reduces risk of common adverse birth outcomes, with the booster conveying additional protection. We therefore recommend that pregnant people not only be vaccinated against COVID-19, but also stay up to date with their vaccination schedule."
