Rightwingers are promoting aggressive anti-bikeism as a key element of the reactionary political identity. Just the most destructive people, reflexively raging against anything coded “left” or “woke.” And so even the most universally beneficial trends and behavior are declared evil and “Un-American” 1/
"Tal vez su mayor contribución a la guerra no estuvo en las trincheras, sino en el legado de su testimonio. Una investigación ha calculado que los 2.300 combatientes británicos que lucharon en la guerra de España escribieron y publicaron, entre todos ellos, 730 obras literarias, en su mayoría diarios de guerra."
Viruses don't travel on their own through the air, they actually catch rides in aerosols which also contain water, mucins from the lining of the lungs, deep lung fluid and surfactants to make up the complex blob you see in the image ( https://twitter.com/jeffgilchrist/status/1467582905396432904 ). 7/

"Há anos que reclamo de governos sem qualquer resposta o esclarecimento documental sobre muito aspectos da negociação com a troika, que permitiram saber que medidas são de autoria da troika ou dos governos Sócrates e Passos-Portas-troika, mas duvido que haja sequer um registo fiável desses contactos, em especial quando se sabia que um ministro português usava um computador de um membro da troika para enviar correspondência."

"Whether and how microglia surveillance is coupled to brain state switches during natural sleep-wake cycles remain unclear. To address this question, we used miniature two-photon microscopy (mTPM) to acquire time-lapse high-resolution microglia images of the somatosensory cortex, along with EEG/EMG recordings and behavioral video, in freely-behaving mice."
German physician and physicist Julius von Mayer was born #OTD in 1814.
He is best known for enunciating in 1841 one of the original statements of the conservation of energy or what is now known as one of the first versions of the first law of thermodynamics, namely that "energy can be neither created nor destroyed". His achievements were overlooked and priority for the discovery of the mechanical equivalent of heat was attributed to James Joule in the following year.
"The number of EU citizens refused entry to the UK since Brexit has increased fivefold, Home Office figures show.
In the first three quarters of 2019 just over 2,200 people from the EU were turned away at the border – compared with 11,600 in the first three quarters of 2023."

"In this brief review, we present and summarize the data describing how newly described enhancers located within the large V gene portion of Igκ and Igh loci work as a higher-order mechanism for the regulation of the Ab repertoire formation by regulating chromatin interactions and epigenetic milieu, which in turn alter the 3D chromatin topology of the loci."

Here is a story about a world map of a European that lived around 1300 AD. The drawn map features south at the top, and shows "africa" in the upper part, “Asia” in the lower part left, and “Europa” in the lower part right. Africa is symbolized as a mosque with tall buildings, which explains the Islamic influence of the map orientation: Christian maps of the period have East at the top. However, let’s have a look at the details.

(Boosting is welcomed) I'd like to find a #peertube server (instance?) accepting general #scientific #research videos, coming from international #workshops #conferences, or remote #seminars I made. My main research fields are #appliedmathematics, #inverseproblem, #optics, and #machinelearning. I don't have the possibility to create one server myself but I'm ready to support one. So far, I've parsed many possibilities but either they are closed and do not accept any new users, or I'm off topic with respect to their content and objectives. Any advice?
Absolutely wild that just over the course of my lifetime so far, the share of income going to the bottom 50% of the US income distribution has dropped from 20% to 12%, while income going to the top 1% of the income distribution has risen from 11% to 20%.
In 2015 dollars, the average income per adult of the bottom 50% of the US has stayed $15K/year for more than 40 years, but the average income of the top 1% has increased from $400K to $1.3M/yr per adult.

Hey #Fediverse, dear #Histodons, let there be more paper among us. This is the start of a series devoted to #PaperHistory - especially but not exclusively to the first European paper era from c14-c18.
Let's start with schools in early modern Europe. Schools were social spaces of learning and teaching, and above all, paper was present. What you see is an imagined schooling scene from the seventeenth century by Jan Steen. Highlighted are papers. Have a look.

Science is cool!
And this thing here even more so.
I got to take apart an Adiabatic Demagnetisation Refrigerator Cryostat with the wonderful @stdlogicvector , a small cryostat that was used to cool a transition edge sensor to ~40 mK.
It works by applying a magnetic field to some funny materials, and when removing that field the material cools down below its original temperature, which is 4.2 kelvin in this case.
The main cooling is done by a huge amount of LN2 and LHe.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
