'A member of civil society from Egypt said the surveillance and intimidation was “signalling to everyone that we have to behave, or else. It’s really very hard,” he said. “Unlike other Cops, everyone seems to feel afraid due to this surveillance. There’s less activity, you don’t feel the spirit of the event, a push for climate activism and against the big polluters.”

A pretty inconvenient truth. The price of scientific visibility is paid with air travel and the associated damage to the environment.
Sadly, it looks like not even an ongoing pandemic can change this unsustainable privilege (after all, researchers of low and middle income countries tend to be excluded due to high travel costs and visa issues).

How Candida poaches host heme:

"While vacuolar function and the endocytic pathway were found to be essential for heme-iron utilization (Weissman et al., 2008), the mechanism for heme internalization into the cell was unknown. Here, we fill this gap, and identify a family of membrane proteins, previously classified as FREs based on sequence homology (Almeida et al., 2009; Baek et al., 2008), that are essential for heme uptake into the cell."

This preprint showing masks reduce COVID incidence in schools appeared Aug 9 medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/20 It was published Nov 9th nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM Given schools opened in the interim, is this the best argument for preprints in public health?

Job post

We are hiring an editor!

Do you have a background in ecology or evolution, and want to be involved in a broader range of topics than your own research area?

We are particularly keen to extend the geographical representation of our editorial team (see some possible locations in the job ad below).

'Geopolitical thinking is unabashedly grim, and it regards hopes for peace, justice and rights with scepticism. The question, however, is not whether it’s bleak, but whether it’s right. Past decades have brought major technological, intellectual and institutional changes. But are we still, as Marshall contends, “prisoners of geography”?

"The neuropeptidergic connectome of C. elegans" by Lidia Ripoll et al. 2022, a collaboration between Isabel Beets', Petra Vertes' and Bill Schafer's labs biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

"This connectome is characterized by a high connection density, extended signaling cascades, autocrine foci, and a decentralized topology, with a large, highly interconnected core containing three constituent communities sharing similar patterns of input connectivity. Intriguingly, several of the most important nodes in this connectome are little-studied neurons that are specialized for peptidergic neuromodulation."

Population health was already declining pre-covid - the pandemic has made it worse, partly through tens of millions of people getting sick with Covid, millions not fully recovering + general impact of an NHS in crisis for over a year.

Cost of living also adding pressure.

I have been asked what solutions exist for preprinting in #French rather than in English. I know HAL (doc.archives-ouvertes.fr/) but it isn't clear whether researchers based outside 🇫🇷 (e.g. from 🇨🇭) can use it. Does anyone know what solutions exist for non-English #preprinting? #preprint

Producing gene transfer agents can have benefits. Andrew Lang explores a new #PLOSBiology study showing that DNA transfer by these phage-like elements allows host cells with damaged DNA to repair DNA and survive. Primer: plos.io/3EiWpHV Paper: plos.io/3E0EyVR

"By comparing the highest-elevation frog, Nanorana parkeri, with its low-elevation relatives, we showed higher UV tolerance in N. parkeri after a time course UV exposure. Combined a chromosome-level reference genome of N. parkeri with large-scale transcriptomic and microRNA (miRNA) profiling, we showed a temporal expression pattern of UV defense genes in N. parkeri. Some miRNAs correlate with both cell cycle and immune genes in expression, suggesting their regulatory role involved in UV defense."

"Kitefin sharks (Dalatias licha) have been known about since the 18th century, but it was only in January 2020 that scientists saw them glowing in the dark for the first time. They are not the only bioluminescent sharks – roughly one in 10 species has that ability – but at up to 1.8 metres, kitefins are by far the biggest that have been found."

"If Aristotle had plugged his nose when he tasted the apple, he might have noticed that the apple sensation disappeared leaving only sweetness and perhaps some sourness—depending on the apple. He might have decided that the apple sensation was entirely different from the sweet and sour tastes, and he might have decided that there are six elementary sensations."
