"Here, I review what has been learned about the evolution and genetics of life-history variation in D. melanogaster by drawing on numerous sources spanning population and quantitative genetics, genomics, experimental evolution, evolutionary ecology, and physiology."

This one is for everyone nostalgic for old school metabolic maps
"We studied the genetic architecture of the human plasma metabolome using 913 metabolites assayed in 19,994 individuals and identified 2,599 variant–metabolite associations (P < 1.25 × 10−11) within 330 genomic regions, with rare variants (minor allele frequency ≤ 1%) explaining 9.4% of associations."
'Charles Darwin wandered out over a coral reef. He gazed through the water into the ‘gullies and hollows’ below. He admired the scene, though not excessively. The naturalists he had read had described ‘submarine grottos decked with a thousand beauties’. This was, he thought, ‘rather exuberant language’. The marine biologist Juli Berwald was more impressed. She describes her first encounter with a coral reef as ‘love at first sight’. The reef was ‘awash in colour ... beyond Baroque ... each delicate petal and tendril was a revelation; each filigree and lattice an astonishment.’ She had one thing Darwin didn’t: a snorkel.'

Hi everyone! I'm a faculty member in the Department of #Microbiology at the #UniversityofPennsylvania.
My lab loves to study #host:pathogen interactions & #Innateimmunity from the molecular to organismal level.
I also care a lot about #education, #mentoring, & #diversity, #equity, & #inclusion in #STEM. I am Chair of our Microbiology, Virology, & Parasitology Graduate Program & Vice-Chair of Diversity & Inclusion for #PennMicro. I look forward to learning from others here!
#introduction I am an #immunologist at the #universityoftoronto. I study how our #mucosal immune system can influence our health, especially brain health. I love constructive discussions about science and how to make #academia a better place for everyone. I love #cooking, #gardening, #singing, #canoeing and learning from my 2 sons. Oh and my 3 @Cats too.

"From their hero Paul Cézanne, they’d learned to break down and reassemble multiple perspectives. Scrutinizing central African sculpture in Paris’s colonial ethnology museum, they’d learned to clarify bodies into pure geometry. Crossing those two wires they jolt the history of western art, and spark a whole new kind of image that, for the first time in 500 years, is done with simulating real life. "

"Here, we reviewed a T Cell Receptor (TCR)-primed environmental cue-boosted model of adipose Treg cells’ tissue adaptation, especially in response to IL-33, IFN-α, insulin and androgen signals, which trigger sophisticated transcriptional cascades and ultimately establish unique transcriptional modules in adipose Treg cell subsets."

Mastodon FAQ: Toot sweet?
https://mjcarty.com/mastodon-faq-toot-sweet
My latest blog post is an attempt to answer some frequently asked questions for new Mastodon users or the Mastodon-curious.
Along the way, it takes in some wise words from the following excellent folk: @davidallengreen; @clive; @teago_emplaw; and @Kategl.
Also featuring some art from the wonderful Winsor McCay, who (I was delighted to discover) was very fond of drawing the mastodon!
joining mastodon to discuss #science, #cardiology, #immunology, #immunocardiology, tissue repair, #aging, amongst other topics.
It's very exciting to see the important work that Janani Ravi from @cubiomedinfo does building #inclusive #DataScience #communities highlighted!
Early years of the Coens' genius composer, Carter Burwell:
"One day, Burwell saw a help-wanted ad in the Times for a computer programmer at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a nonprofit research institution whose director, James D. Watson, had shared the Nobel Prize in 1962 for discovering the structure of DNA. Burwell wrote a jokey letter in which he said that, although he had none of the required skills, he would cost less to employ than someone with a Ph.D. would. Surprisingly, the letter got him the job, and he spent two years as the chief computer scientist on a protein-cataloguing project funded by a grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Association."
A team of 386 researchers from 112 countries came up with a consensus statement on what needs to happen with #COVID19 now. It's refreshingly direct, reasonable, good science and good public health. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05398-2

"Here, we have pioneered live-imaging techniques and performed functional interrogation to show that the squid Doryteuthis pealeii utilizes mechanisms during retinal neurogenesis that are hallmarks of vertebrate processes. We find that retinal progenitor cells in the squid undergo nuclear migration until they exit the cell cycle. We identify retinal organization corresponding to progenitor, post-mitotic, and differentiated cells. Finally, we find that Notch signaling may regulate both retinal cell cycle and cell fate."
