"His own evolution at La Ribaute, a former silk factory where Kiefer lived with his family from 1992 to 2007, has spawned an unlikely settlement of structures and pavilions inhabited not by people but by works of art. Spread over almost 100 acres, connected by footbridges and underground passageways, layered like an archaeological dig, the property opened to the public for the first time this year. It is now a permanent exhibit, open annually from May to October."

Hello, Mastodon world! I am an assoc. prof of #biochemistry at San Diego State University #SDSU studying the kinetic, structural, and cellular consequences of #cancer -driving #enzyme mutants...with a focus on IDH and polymerases. I fight for diverse access to #STEM -- our #diversity is our superpower!
"We probed the B cell repertoire from peripheral blood of mothers with primary and secondary ZIKV infections and established 9 ZIKV-binding B lymphoblastoid cell lines (B-LCL). One of them produced an IgM antibody, DH1017.IgM, in its native pentameric conformation. DH1017.IgM was somatically mutated, did not cross-react with other flaviviruses, displayed ultrapotent ZIKV neutralization that depended on its isotype and protected mice from viremia more efficiently than the respective IgG upon lethal ZIKV challenge."

By way of #introduction, (or #introductions), I'm a writer. I write a column about science for the New York Times, and I also write books. The pandemic has taken up a lot of my working attention since early 2020, but a lot of other aspects of biology have obsessed me in previous years, and I now have a little time for them again. Neanderthals, aliens, CRISPR, ecological collapse, etc.
Still pondering how best to use Mastodon. (I haven't deleted my Twitter account, at least not yet.)
Antimicrobial Resistance Is Growing because of COVID
2+ years of COVID, w/rampant & inappropriate antibiotic use, antimicrobial resistance is substantially worse.
Routine infections in the blood, lungs & urinary tract, & typhoid & tuberculosis, are becoming increasingly drug resistant.
10mill people/yr by 2050 projected to die from diseases we could once treat.

Here is one of my favorite papers this year, on how the ribosome holds the growing protein nascent chain near the peptidyl transferase center (PTC). https://www.nature.com/articles/s41557-022-01073-1
Not only great science but great people behind the science. #Ribosome #StructuralBiology
#Introduction #myfirsttoot. Hi everyone. I’m a #microbiologist and #immunologist @PennVet learning about the innate immune response to bacterial pathogens together with the amazing people in my lab. I love the #SciCom community that scientists, science writers, students & others in the science ecosystem built to support each other and communicate ideas in a timely way. Here to keep that going in case Space Karen blows up the other place.

Hi all! I figured I would add to the #Introduction happening on here!
My name is Alyssa Paparella (she/her) and I'm a #PhD candidate who started this platform in 2020!
I aim to continue to raise awareness for those #DisabledInSTEM and work towards accessibility and inclusion for all. Diversity and disability advocacy is vital to who I am!
In the lab, I study #epigenetics and work in a #biology lab and a #chemistry lab!
Also, I take care of any #cat that I see on the streets!
Giving this a try. I work on evolutionary & population genetics. Prof at UC Davis.
Thank to @alxsim for all his work setting #EcoEvoSocial excited to see the community here.

If you're looking for some quality science writing, my friend Olivia Judson has a new piece over at Aeon (no paywall).
"Darwin, of course, is famous for his work on evolution. His book On the Origin of Species (1859) laid out a wealth of evidence that evolution occurs, and proposed a mechanism – natural selection – for how it does so. Although much has been learned since, and many of his ideas have been extended, corrected or refined, the Origin remains the founding text of modern biology, and is the pinnacle of Darwin’s work. But Darwin’s first scientific monograph and his last – the two bookends of his thoughts, so to speak – were both about how animals have, over vast spans of time, transformed the landscape."

"Part of what has made Butler so beloved is the work that preceded these honors: the way she envisioned her own future and encouraged herself to keep going despite the very real obstacles in her path. She recorded her goals and aspirations in her personal journals in terms that have since resonated across the decades:
I will buy a beautiful home in an excellent neighborhood.
I will help poor Black youngsters broaden their horizons.
I will travel whenever and wherever in the world that I choose.
My books will be read by millions of people!
So be it! See to it!
With great discipline, she engaged honestly with a set of questions about who she was and where she was going. Her responses were intended for her publisher — and ultimately for the world — but they were written especially for herself."

Spread the word to finishing PhD students and postdocs that there is still time to apply for the Invest program at Northeastern, which seeks to recruit them and help them transition into faculty positions. #evolution #genomics especially encouraged! #jobs @joboffersecoevo https://cos.northeastern.edu/invest-a-new-junior-faculty-program/
While I'm very happy I made the decision to swap from #Pseudomonas to #Acinetobacter for my #Ecology and #experimentalEvolution study system and #research, trying to set everything up from scratch is such a pain.
Turns out you take a lot for granted when working on P. aeruginosa... So any advice or resources people have for studying #microbiology using A. baumannii would be much appreciated 🦠

An #introduction to eLife's new Mastodon page!
We're an #OpenAccess not-for-profit journal that publishes and reviews #research in the life and biomedical sciences.
We want to improve the way research is practised and shared in part by working with early-career researchers #ECR and supporting #OpenSource technology.
We also just announced our new publishing model that we hope will tackle an overreliance on journal titles and publishing decisions as quality measures for science and scientists.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
