'The scramble to launch a new generation of drugs to tackle obesity — a disease that affects about 650mn people worldwide — has caused unease among some critics, who warn about their potential misuse and side effects. But most health experts say the drugs should have a very positive impact on patients with obesity, a disease that can have devastating health implications and that largely goes untreated.'

Amazing work showing that #genetic #disruption of the #kinase module (CDK) of Mediator complex in chimeric #antigen receptor T cell (CAR T) resulted in enhanced effector function and increased #antitumor activity (disruption of CDK module increases core Mediator #chromatin occupancy at #enhancers)

Nice piece by @HelenBranswell on #COVID mitigation strategies this festive season. My plans: celebrate but #vaccinate (and boost!); fest but #test (just before gathering); reduce chance of exposure in week leading up to Thanksgiving; #maskup in public places indoors still. Not a big pain for us, not absolutely fool-proof, but where I ended up. And importantly I have the resources to do this. Had COVID in October, RAT-positive for three weeks! I do not want this again.
My #introduction is overdue. I’m a professor at Penn who studies memory using systems and computational approaches. I’m also writing a book: When it comes to understanding the brain, what are we trying to achieve? What’s our plan to get there? What challenges do we face? #neuroscience #author
Writing has deepened my appreciation for community-based progress. I’m excited to be on this inclusive platform where we can leverage collective intelligence, and work through conceptual blocks together.
"England, Wales and five other European nations have confirmed they will not wear the OneLove armband at the World Cup in Qatar, saying Fifa made clear they would face sporting sanctions and that their captains could be booked or even forced to leave the pitch."
The lab of Jonathan Rodenfels at MPI-CBG is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in the Energetics of Biological Systems. The research group pursues interdisciplinary experimental research at the interface of cell & developmental biology, metabolism, biochemistry, and physical bioenergetics. https://www.mpi-cbg.de/join-us/open-positions/job-offer/postdoctoral-researcher-energetics
Hello world, it's time to do an #introduction! I'm a neuroscientist (postdoc) currently based in Göttingen, Germany. I have broad interests in #neuroscience, including sensory coding, neural circuits, and sensorimotor transformations.
So far, I studied how the retina processes natural scenes using a combination of large-scale electrophysiology and computational modeling.
I'll be soon leaving the tidy entryway to the visual system to venture into understanding cortical processing during decision-making.
Very cool paper on ML interpretability and explainability.
I was surprised I hadn't come across it before https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.01805
"Today’s two dominant organisational forms are practically the same: the one-man autocratic state and the one-man autocratic company. Both have the same vulnerability: the idiosyncrasy of an overpraised loner."

Having a look through the axolotl genome and it seems there are two copies of Brachyury present. Does anybody have examples of this in other species not due to whole are partial genome duplication? #DevBio
"Multiple myeloma (MM) accounts for ~10% of all haematologic malignancies. Little is known about high intratumour heterogeneities in patients stratified by the Revised International Staging System (R-ISS). Herein, we constructed a single-cell transcriptome atlas to compare differential expression patterns among stages."

The single best thing written on endemicity & #COVID is by @ariskatzourakis from last January.
"Thinking that endemicity is both mild and inevitable is more than wrong, it is dangerous: it sets humanity up for many more years of disease, including unpredictable waves of outbreaks. It is more productive to consider how bad things could get if we keep giving the virus opportunities to outwit us. Then we might do more to ensure that this does not happen."
@epidemiology
Thanks to CZI funding, we will soon have a Research Software Engineer (#RSE) position at the UCL Sainsbury Wellcome Centre to work on #BrainGlobe (https://github.com/brainglobe) and develop #napari plugins.
The post will be based in my RSE team and collaborate with the UCL Centre for Advanced Research Computing.
Happy to chat informally to anyone interested.
Official advert will follow soon. The salary will be UCL Grade 8 (£47k+) for a fixed term of two years in the first instance.
As additional Appendix to my #introduction, I would like to #boost our recent #DrugDiscovery efforts in the field of #CysticFibrosis: we have developed #MultiTarget compounds acting at the same time as #CFTR #Correctors and #Antibacterials or #Antivirals depending on the specific functionalization of the same chemotype.
