If anyone fancies watching a beautiful 6 minute scientific video about #SARSCoV2 life cycle, this is really quite absorbing... #COVID19 #IDMastodon #virology

What determines our organs' architecture? How can we measure, predict, and manipulate it? Scientists around Keisuke Ishihara @IshiharaKsk from the lab of Elly Tanaka (@tanaxolotl) have tackled the question using neuroepithelial #organoids. (1/4)

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is clearly associated with the childhood paralysis disease Acute Flaccid Myelitis. However, the upsurge in EV-D68 infections this year has not resulted in more paralytic disease, and we do not know why. Hear a clinical perspective here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV5

and an #introduction to my lab! crowley-lab.org/
My lab is made up of an amazing diverse group of trainees. They are working on projects related to basal peptide signaling (Dakota), circuit pertubations caused by adolescent binge drinking (Dr. Seemiller, Avery), & neuropeptide changes with aging and #neurodegeneration (Grace) plus two amazing technicians (Keith, Dani) and many stellar undergraduates. We're also very interested in new #tech development for #neuroscience #technology #STEM

Version 2022

"With Thanksgiving only days away, STAT asked infectious diseases experts how they’re handling the risk of catching Covid at this point. We’ve done this twice before, you may recall, when the Delta wave was surging in August 2021, and a few months later, just before Thanksgiving."

Deadline to apply for the HHMI Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program is 12/7/2022 hhmi.org/programs/hanna-h-gray
Please apply - this is a great program!

Molecular adjuvants, spike glycans and spike conformations are key to evoke neutralizing antibodies. As for RBD-based boosts, also other protein-based vaccines designed on the "ancestral" sequence are able to immunologically "control" - at the moment - the BA.4/BA.5 mutations...

I don’t understand why people think Mastodon is difficult. It seems pretty straightforward, and the separate servers are no biggie. I’m enjoying this fresh start here, like moving to a new apartment!

My episode on the podcast "Big Picture Science" is about how a trickle-down approach to vaccination failed.

It reminded several people I spoke with from South Africa, Malawi & India of the worst days of HIV, when drugs were only available for rich countries. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/

A new report from Stanford argues for changing how we teach science in the face of rampant disinformation. “…the goal of science education must be to make “competent outsiders” of all students.”

Focus should be on how to determine whether a source is credible.

#NewPaper -- we use #ExperimentalEvolution to show:
-- gaining a tetracycline efflux pump by HGT is super costly for Staph aureus in low oxygen environments
-- treatment with tetracyclines prevents evolutionary adaptation to low oxygen (via gyrB mutation)

Possibly explains why tetracyclines remain useful treatments for Staph aureus infections that are often characterised by #hypoxia

#introduction
I am neuroscientist and engineer. Our lab at Johns Hopkins University BME is interested in how the brain computes information about the world and how this representation is shaped by sensory experience from early development up until old age. We focus on the auditory system and use in vitro and in vivo optical and electrophysiological methods, behavioral approaches, etc.

Some Mastodon tips I've learned:

- You need a fit, young hunting party
- They are not easy to bring down, so make sure your spears have extremely sharp tips
- Ensure you have a supply line and pack animals available to transport the meat and pelt back to the cave

New pre-print from @_Lyndsay_94@twitter.com collaborating with @ramon_grima@twitter.com 😀. Analysing single-molecule #Nanopore, we found intra-molecular heterogeneity in DNA methylation patterns at heterochromatin. "We investigated the mechanistic origins of the SBS5-like mutational pattern in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and show that translesion DNA synthesis and sugar metabolism are directly linked to this form of mutagenesis. We propose that conserved metabolic processes in cells are coupled to continuous generation of genetic variants, which can be acted upon by selection to drive the evolution of biological entities."

Just arrived here on Mastodon so here's an ! Total Internal Reflection (TIR) is a (totalinternalreflectionblog.co) but one that focuses on the human side of science instead of research.

Posts typically fall into two types - either commentary/opinion (sometimes silly, sometimes serious), or guides aimed at improving young scientists' .

I'll be highlighting new postings here, and would be delighted to get comments/feedback/input - the blog is all about starting a discussion rather than having the last word.

#introduction

I think about how a collective of agents (animals, neurons, mathematical structures) can solve problems. Additionally, I am interested in what it means to produce a good model and understanding of something.

I am excited to be here to learn and discuss.

Who else on here works on #phylogenetics?

Maybe do a quick post with what you work on (e.g. clades, methods, questions...), and include the hashtag #phylogenetics so we can find and follow each other. Feel free to link to a paper or two!

For my part - I work on model selection, phylogenetic algorithms, mixture models, and at the moment am mostly working on the problem of how you find >1 tree in a single alignment, e.g. our latest attempt biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

I just read @DavidLowry 's excellent 2012 review of the evolution of the #ecotype concept, from Turesson and Clausen, Keck and Hiesey through Stebbins, Grant, Raven, Levin, Wu, Mallet, Schemske, and the early genomic era.

A good reference if you are interested in how #biosystematics connects to modern studies of plant #speciation and #species concepts.
