'We report on the protocolized use of tecovirimat (SIGA Technologies), an antiviral drug with activity against orthopoxviruses (including monkeypox and smallpox),1 under an expanded access program for all patients with monkeypox virus (MPXV) disease in Mbaïki, Central African Republic, between December 2021 and February 2022.2 Included in the study were 14 patients in whom MPXV infection had been diagnosed.'

Nice, comprehensive review on anti-helminth immunity by De'Broski Herbert and colleagues. #Immunology
Hi #ScienceMastodon, I'm a physician-scientist and immunologist. Our lab studies how aberrant immunity at barrier surfaces drive disease. I have a special interest in type 2 immunity and allergic diseases, but am generally fascinated by #immunology and #biology.
'However, you may not know some of the most basics facts about the object. For instance, what was its purpose, and what did it actually say? In this video, Ilona Regulski, curator of Egyptian written culture at the British Museum in London, walks viewers through the stone and its ‘decree’, issued during the Ptolemaic dynasty in 196 BCE.'

'Our findings show that efforts to develop parvoviruses as therapeutic tools can be approached from a rational foundation based on comparative evolutionary analysis. To support this, we published our data in the form of an open, extensible, and cross-platform database designed to facilitate the wider utilisation of evolution-related domain knowledge in parvovirus research.'

🌟To early career women PIs with one NIH grant:
Check out this supplement! Can provide up to $70K to offset 'critical life events' including birth, adoption, or other caregiving. Maybe could help offset some of the burdens people have faced during COVID

So happy to see that you can use a .gif for your header here. Having a little fun with that to show y'all the full look at one of my favorite microscope images of a #macrophage (#immune cell) in the process of slurping up the bacteria that causes #Lyme disease. Showing that here alongside my favorite single slice.
#Drosophila #Advent Day2: The other UK member of the melanogaster group is D. suzukii, or “Spotted Wing Drosophila” #SWD. A fearsome #soft-fruit #pest with a saw-like ovipositor https://academic.oup.com/jee/article/114/5/1950/6369578, Dsuz originated in the far east and has recently spread around the world https://academic.oup.com/mbe/article/37/8/2369/5821433, being first recorded in the UK in 2012 https://www.researchgate.net/publication/280066071_First_record_of_Drosophila_suzukii_Matsumura_Diptera_Drosophilidae_in_Great_Britain. Dsuz is very cold tolerant compared to its relatives, with a larger, darker, tougher over-wintering adult form https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ece3.6517
"Here we analyze data from 828 children in Kilifi, Kenya with severe, uncomplicated, and asymptomatic malaria infection over 18 years of falling malaria transmission. We examine markers of host immunity and metabolism, and markers of parasite growth and transmission investment. We find that inflammatory responses and reduced plasma lysophosphatidylcholine levels are associated with markers of increased investment in parasite sexual reproduction (i.e., transmission investment) and reduced growth (i.e., asexual replication)."

Wrapping up an Intro course with one of my favorite topics: Consciousness (C)!
I really like how @anilkseth parses the conceptual space of C in this essay (a precursor to his recent book, Being You):

There's:
C level (awake vs coma);
C content (awareness);
C self (that little person in our heads who is driving it all; free will).
On the topic of free will & the brain, do you know of references appropriate for early undergrads? (No Penrose please).

A Gull photobombs a panoramic view of Marseille. Marseille, a port city in southern France, has been a crossroads of immigration and trade since its founding by the Greeks circa 600 B.C. At its heart is the Vieux-Port (Old Port), where fishmongers sell their catch along the boat-lined quay.
