"...CIHR requested proposals for a CA$90 million funding program.... it came with a twist. After peer review, two additional committees, one of which included senior civil servants who did not necessarily have scientific training, made the... funding decisions, based on whether the proposals aligned with the government’s Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences Strategy. In some cases... proposals with lower scores from peer reviewers jumped ahead of those with better scores." https://www.science.org/content/article/canada-scientists-are-struggling-stagnant-funding

Hello!
I am a biomedical scientist and a research group leader at Nova Medical School, Lisbon, Portugal.
Our lab is interested in #genetics, #physiology, #neurobiology, #behavior, #development, #evolution, #synbio, #bioengineering, #diseasemodelling, and we use #Drosophila, #stemcells, and #computationalbiology approaches.
I am interested in everything #Science, #History, #Politics, #Music, and other stuff.

"In this Review we mark the tenth anniversary of the approval of ipilimumab and discuss the foundational scientific history of ICB, together with the history of the discovery, development and elucidation of the mechanism of action of the first generation of drugs targeting the #CTLA4 and #PD1 pathways."
#Drosophila #Advent Day3: Today we hop across to D. obscura in the eponymous obscura group. A common native of European woods, Dobs feeds on sap flux yeasts, fungi, and maybe rotting plants https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00222937800770031 —but is happy to come to baits. The obscura group s.l. are well studied for their reproductive biology, particularly their dimorphic sperm https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1558-5646.2007.00280.x, but D. obscura itself may be most famous as one of the first known cases of a driving X chromosome https://academic.oup.com/genetics/article/13/6/488/6063368
#Oncology #oncologyresearch An estimated 1 million cancer diagnoses have been missed across Europe in the last 2 years.
With experts warning of a 'cancer epidemic in the next decade', a new @TheLancetOncol Commission outlines steps to strengthen the research landscape:

'That movie is Yu Haibo and Kiki Tianqi Yu’s documentary China’s Van Goghs, which you can watch just above. Much of it takes place in the village of Dafen in China’s Guangdong province, home to thousands and thousands of oil painters, all of whom make their living making replicas (in various sizes) of famous paintings by the likes of Leonardo, Rembrandt, Dalí, Basquiat, and — above all, it seems — Van Gogh. It speaks to the speed and scale of modern Chinese industry that this activity began only in 1989, but grew such that, at one point, Dafen was supplying 60 percent of the oil paintings in the world.'
''On the gallery walls surrounding the piece Ai pinned lists of names — thousands of them — of the dead, marked in memory despite the best efforts of Chinese officialdom to consign them to oblivion. “Straight” is the “Guernica” of our young, bloodied century, and no textual history could possibly recover, as this masterpiece does, the enormous weight of the event’s catastrophe.'

'These data demonstrate an important physiological role of AMPKβ1 Ser108 phosphorylation in promoting fatty acid oxidation, mitochondrial biogenesis and autophagy under conditions of high lipid availability. As both ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting increase circulating free fatty acid levels, AMPK activity, mitochondrial biogenesis, and mitophagy, these data suggest a potential unifying mechanism which may be important in mediating these effects.'
'The above-mentioned experiment, undertaken by Sherlock Holmes, was based on the work of early forensic expert Robert Christison, who became Chair of Medical Jurisprudence (now called Forensic Medicine) in 1822. He was one of the first toxicology experts and was such a reliable medical witness in court that he became the Crown Witness for the prosecution for nearly 33 years. His discovery of post-mortem bruising occurred during his investigation into one of the most famous serial murder cases in history.'

'Here a new normal was won through vaccination, to a large degree, but also through near-universal infection and mass death. So far, American Covid mortality in 2022 is below the levels of 2020 and 2021, but not that far below, with deaths this year two-thirds of those in 2020 and half as high as those in 2021. Covid-19 is on track to be the country’s third leading cause of death for the third straight year, behind only heart disease and cancer.'

This is pretty cool.
"Here, we show that the activity of interleukin-2 (IL-2), a cytokine critical to T cell immunity, is profoundly affected by pH, limiting IL-2 signaling within the acidic environment of tumors...Directed evolution enabled selection of a pH-selective IL-2 mutein (Switch-2)...high-dose Switch-2 therapy induces potent immune activation and tumor rejection with reduced on-target toxicity in normal tissues." #Immunology

Another #introduction …this time public I am a #neuroscientist based at the #ovgu university Magdeburg. After a PhD in Berlin with Michael Brecht and a postdoc in the lab of Susana Lima at the Champalimaud Foundation I recently joined the institute of biology in Magdeburg as a tenured researcher and professor. My lab will study how neural circuits are at the interface between the multimodal environment and the homeostatic body in order to drive social and sexual behavior in mice. #neuroscience
'The shift in speech is just the tip of a set of changes on the service under Mr. Musk. Accounts that Twitter used to regularly remove — such as those that identify as part of the Islamic State, which were banned after the U.S. government classified ISIS as a terror group — have come roaring back. Accounts associated with QAnon, a vast far-right conspiracy theory, have paid for and received verified status on Twitter, giving them a sheen of legitimacy.'

The lab has identified one of the major mechanisms to explain the very large amount of adaptation driven by viruses in the host virus-interacting proteins (VIPs): changes in protein stability.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
