'The following year, over a long weekend, Hardy and his colleague Gerald Higgins typed up a landmark perspective that used the term “amyloid cascade hypothesis” for the first time. “I wrote what I thought was a simple article saying, basically, if amyloid causes the disease in this case, maybe amyloid is the cause in all cases,” Hardy said. “I just typed it, sent it off to Science and they took it without any changes.”

"I lived in New Orleans for a period recently, and McCarthy brought the city back to me. His protagonist, Bobby Western, spends a lot of time in its bars, including the Old Absinthe House and the now-defunct Seven Seas. He reads his newspapers and takes his coffee, presumably with chicory, at Café Du Monde. He eats at old-school fine-dining establishments such as Galatoire’s and Arnaud’s, but unless someone else is paying, he generally measures out his life in hamburgers and red beans and rice and pie."

It's always exciting when something to do with plants ends up on a "best of" list
https://cell.substack.com/p/biology-breakthroughs-2022
Number 4 on the list of "Biology Breakthroughs of 2022" is the work of Brophy et al. (Science, 2022) https://www.science.org/doi/abs/10.1126/science.abo4326 "Synthetic genetic circuits as a means of reprogramming plant roots."

"It may be too early to declare the global end of the Covid-19 pandemic emergency because of a potentially devastating wave to come in China, according to several leading scientists and advisers to the World Health Organization.
Their views represent a shift since China began to dismantle its zero-Covid policy last week after a spike in infections and unprecedented public protests. Projections have suggested the world’s second-largest economy could face more than a million deaths in 2023 after the abrupt change in course."
Mexican fruit flies wave their wings at predatory #spiders; surely that's risky? Apparently not. Dinesh Rao and colleagues have discovered that the movement apparently #camouflages the insect by making it vanish in a blur in the eyes of the spider, causing it to hesitate long enough for the fly to make its escape.

Happy day everyone! I am one of the #twitter migrates, so I'm new here and a little lost . I'm a # Ph.D. candidate at the Univerisity of Bern #uniBe who uses #edna tools coupled with different sequencing approaches (e.g., #metabarcoding #metagenomics) to study #microbial community dynamics in recirculating #aquaculture systems #RAS. I am passionate about #nature and #wonderlust, so I will mostly post about exciting #Science and pretty nature photos.
Thought I’d write a quick #introduction! I'm a Professor at the University of Toronto where my lab studies the neural and cognitive mechanisms supporting memory and perception.
Recently, we’ve launched a line of research that seeks to translate core principles from memory science into tangible solutions to mitigate memory loss. You can read about our first attempt here: https://psyarxiv.com/2fwup/.
Very happy to be part of the #NeuroscienceMigration and to connect with you here!

New on the Node – Development presents… December videos
The recordings from our #Devpres webinar on metabolic and nutritional control of development and regeneration, the topic of our upcoming Special Issue, are now available. Featuring talks from Natalia López Anguita, Hannah Brunsdon and Benjamin Jackson, chaired by Irene Miguel-Aliaga.

I am an assistant professor / PI at University of Montreal and Mila.
🧠 I work in computational neuroscience and AI to understand how specialized circuits brain-wide coordinate to drive behavior.
🐒 I do behavioral experiments for systems neuroscience studying learning and movement.
🦾 I apply all of this to enable neuroprosthetic devices, like spinal cord stimulation approaches for motor rehabilitation.
Ben Johnson wrote this piece for Nature Biotech on #Parkinson's - he's my editor over at #NatureMedicine.
"Recent trial failures have called into question the central role of α-synuclein in Parkinson’s disease pathology. Although many continue to target α-synuclein aggregates in the brain, others are paying attention to the endolysosomal pathway, mitochondria and even glucose metabolism."
Of the 35 countries whose data is collected by the WHO, 80 per cent have an acute shortage of penicillin-related antibiotics. During pandemic for lack of demand producers reduced production!!!!!

'It was the mayor’s first Covid briefing in months, and he does not typically wear a mask in public. City health officials issued an advisory earlier this month strongly recommending that people wear masks in both public indoor settings and crowded outdoor environments, but many New Yorkers who are weary of pandemic restrictions have not complied.'

Intro post for this platform: I am an Asst. Prof. of Genome Sciences at the Univ. of Washington 👋
My lab uses bioinfo, mol bio, and advanced microscopy to develop new tech and study spatial patterns of chromosome organization and gene expression at the single-cell level.
This also seems like a good place to mention that @dschweppe and I have an open add for a postdoc interest in chromatin proteomics 👇
And now for a proper introduction - I'm Christoph Kaleta and heading the Medical Systems Biology lab at Kiel University/Germany. We are using constraint-based metabolic modelling to elucidate the networks of interaction between host as well as microbiota and how pathological changes in these interactions contribute to disease.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
