'An important aspect of this study is that we inferred the fitness landscape based on antibiotic resistance profiles and not genotypes. Although previous studies have focused on constructing fitness landscapes based on mutations for a few genes [4,6], because the number of possible genotype changes (e.g., nucleotide changes) associated with antibiotic resistance evolution is immense [32], empirical fitness landscapes based on genotypes were not capable of predicting/controlling evolution.'

A newly updated & impressive catalogue of the alien flora of the Czech Republic. 👇
A necessary tool to track & manage invasive alien species.

RT @preslia_botany
Knowledge of regional alien floras is essential for nature conservation and management of invasive plants. The 3rd edition of the Catalogue of Czech alien plants of the Czech Republic includes 1576 taxa, of which 417 are naturalized and 75 invasive. http://preslia.cz/do…

"The 18-month investigation, initiated by two congressional committees after the F.D.A. approved the drug, also strongly criticized Biogen, Aduhelm’s manufacturer. Internal documents showed the company set “an unjustifiably high price” of $56,000 a year for Aduhelm because it wanted a history-making “blockbuster” to “establish Aduhelm as one of the top pharmaceutical launches of all time,” even though it knew the high price would burden Medicare and patients, the report found."

This project, spearheaded by postdoc extraordinaire
Sander Liessem, was our first foray into the world of #insulin signaling in #Drosophila. Just like in humans, worms, and mice, insulin is key to regulating #fly metabolism. Different from vertebrates, however, a major population of insulin-producing cells (IPCs) sits right on top of the fly’s brain and releases insulin into circulation.
I am a computational chemist studying biomolecular chemistry and photochemistry. I really enjoy working on problems related to the origins of life and prebiotic chemistry. My most recent research articles focused on the photostability and photochemistry of RNA/DNA building blocks and precursors, electron transfer properties of DNA/RNA, as well as self-repair of DNA lesions. See for example:

They’re asking you to lower your guard for a nasty virus that can invade the brain, disregulate the immune system and damage the vascular system” https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2022/12/21/Ten-Downplayed-COVID-Facts/

Time for an #introduction
I'm a computational (bio)physicisct and have mostly worked with MD simulations of lipid membranes and membrane proteins but also some experience in machine learning and free energy calculations.
Currently I work as a senior scientist at Schrödinger in New York City, after doing a postdoc at Stanford University and a PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics.
Besides work, I'm an avid amateur photographer and I like reading about science, history, and languages.
Happy New Year everyone!

#Introduction
Hi all, I'm finally introducing myself in this new year of 2023! I am a postdoctoral researcher doing #neuroscience, often with a theoretical angle. My own work tends to focus on neural network dynamics, network architecture and (pre)motor control, but my interests are broad and I am trying to use Mastodon to broaden them even more! I also have a special interest in sociology, especially the sociology of #academia. I'm looking forward to learning from the other users, and to communicating about my own research!
An interesting explanation about the federated infrastructure behind Mastodon, with challenges and promises ahead https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/12/mastodon-highlights-pros-and-cons-of-moving-beyond-big-tech-gatekeepers/
Multistep diversification in spatiotemporal bacterial-phage coevolution
"These results highlight the importance of spatial structure and migration for driving phage-bacteria coevolution,..."
There was a quote by a classic developmental biologist - possibly R. Harrison - to the effect that normal development is like a magic trick: as long as it goes well, you learn very little. But when a magician makes a mistake, that's when you get insight into how everything works. Anyone have a reference to the actual quote?
Amazing discovery: how motor neurons come to control fast and slow muscles!
Q: How do developing motor neurons decide to be "fast" (controlling fast-twitch, or "sprinting" muscle fibers) or "slow" (endurance)?
A: Genes called transcription factors determine fast motor neuron "fate." Losing factors make fast neurons project to slow muscle & express "slow motor neuron" genes!

Pls boost -- trying to beat that other site 🤷🏻♂️😝.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
