'On June 28, 2022, researchers from Pfizer–BioNTech and Moderna presented data on their bivalent vaccines to the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (of which I am a member). The results were underwhelming. Bivalent boosters resulted in levels of neutralizing antibodies against BA.1 that were only 1.5 to 1.75 times as high as those achieved with monovalent boosters.'
Great collaborative effort with the Laurent Terradot team on two new #Brucella effectors modulating nuclear proteins just published in Nature Communications. Massive work by outstanding young scientists Arthur Louche and Amandine Blanco who combined #StructuralBiology, #InfectionBiology and a bit of mythology for naming the proteins, and ended up with a lot more questions than when we started!
Congrats to all involved

New open access review out by Paddy Gibson and myself in Current Opinion in Microbiology on bacterial/#pneumococcal cell wall biology and penicillin/amoxicillin resistance. Issue edited by @goleylab Peter Chien. Lot's of new insights into bacterial cell wall biology have been made recently and we tried to cover it all. I really like this figure as it nicely highlights our current knowledge gaps and big open questions in the field.

'Long-lasting sepsis-induced immunoparalysis has been principally studied in primary (1°) memory CD8 T cells; however, the impact of sepsis on memory CD8 T cells with a history of repeated cognate Ag encounters is largely unknown but important in understanding the role of sepsis in shaping the pre-existing memory CD8 T cell compartment.'
'A surge in winter sickness in the northern hemisphere and reduced exports from China have meant patients have found it difficult to get hold of some basic medicines such as penicillin and paracetamol. Almost all 27 EU member states and the UK have reported shortages.
Under pressure from governments, the commission has said it will intervene to ensure “strategic autonomy” in basic medicines through a “systemic industrial policy”.

'They found that the inner ears of small and young E. holgeri individuals were almost as large as those of their adult counterparts, and very similar in shape. Given that inner ears have roles in both audition and the sense of equilibrium, this suggests that E. holgeri babies were able to leave their nest very soon after hatching. This makes it likely that the babies of the species were highly developed when they hatched, and could probably feed themselves almost immediately, possibly similar to chickens'

Hi @Quartzy - is it true that from July onwards you will be charging also academic labs for using your basic order tracking system ($79/5 users)? Do I remember your #freeforever pledge correctly? Thanks for clarifying. #AcademicChatter
OK sounds like #EvolgenPaper is good hashtag for adding to toots and threads on Evolutionary and Population Genetics papers
We could use #EvolutionPaper for papers more generally associated with Evolutionary Biology.
Please RT this and consider using these for tooting about papers, your own of those of others. That way we'll be able to keep track of them all more.

As the U.S. pushed #Native Americans from their lands for westward expansion, museums and the federal government encouraged the looting of #Indigenous remains, funerary objects and cultural items. 30 years since passage of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, @ProPublica investigates the #failure of federally funded universities and museums to expeditiously return human remains.
