'As Adrianna Kezar, Tom DePaola and Daniel T. Scott note in their book “The Gig Academy,” about 70 percent of all college professors work off the tenure track. The majority of these professors make less than $3,500 per course, according to a 2020 report by the American Federation of Teachers.'

#DYK that the forensic scientist Frances Glessner Lee created real crime scene dioramas to train homicide investigators in the 1940s/50s? She was troubled that patrolmen and detectives rarely knew how to secure a scene for the medical examiner, or identify key evidence that might prove useful in a forensic investigation. And so, she set out to create dioramas as educational tools.
She also helped found the first Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard when forensics was in its infancy.

Officially, we have 6.7+ MILLION deaths due to #COVID19. According to a recent review on #Nature, [1] there are at least 65 MILLION people with #LongCovid. Thinking about this collective idiocy and the threat of #climatechange knocking on our door, how will be the world in a couple of years?
"China said on Saturday that it had recorded nearly 60,000 fatalities linked to the coronavirus in the month since the country lifted its strict “zero Covid” policy, accelerating an outbreak that is believed to have infected millions of people. The disclosure was the first time China has provided an official measure of the Covid wave now sweeping the country"

The Librarians Who Rode Horseback Through Rough Terrain To Deliver Books. "Back in the days of horseback deliveries, librarians made their way into the treacherous mountains to make sure the children who lived there (and their parents) wouldn’t have to go without books. Known as 'book women,' they belonged to the Pack Horse Library, part of President Franklin D Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA)." https://twistedsifter.com/2023/01/the-librarians-who-rode-horseback-through-rough-terrain-to-delivery-books/

The findings of this excellent study highlight how incomplete or misinterpreted data can be worse than no data. Early in COVID, rumors and assumptions were flying. THREAD 🧵 https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2800158
Think about a time when you were in the place to have really great ideas and energy to do something about them. Two questions:
1) What conditions that landed you there?
2) Do you shape your life around making that happen again, and if not, what holds you back?
I've been reading this lovely book by the novelist Haruki Murakami and I was pleased to discover that his conditions are also the way a scientist friend works: Creative work in the mornings, running right after, maintain headspace.

The Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area.
