Aproveitemo-la.

"As a young man, Osborn traveled to Britain to study with the biologist and anthropologist Thomas H. Huxley, who was known as “Darwin’s bulldog” for his fierce defense of evolutionary theory. Osborn even met the great man himself when Huxley gave an aging Darwin a tour of his lab, where Osborn at the time was dissecting a lobster brain."

"Thus, although genetic and antigenic variability of viruses like influenza and SARS-CoV-2 make vaccine design more challenging, these factors by themselves cannot fully explain the lack of elicitation of long-term protective immunity against other respiratory mucosal viruses like the more phenotypically stable RSV."

To mark launch of our new video on #preprints review, I've written a short blog on what preprint review is & why it matters. tinyurl.com/25wpb3xm
It's the first blog I've written in a while: so much so had to create new section on our website w/o crashing it. Yikes! @ASAPbio_@twitter.com

In the new #EMBOPodcast, Steve Quake - Head of Science at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative - talks about his career, #OpenScience, entrepreneurism, research funding and much more.

Along with Michael Swift and Felix Horns, he recently posted a #preprint on "Fate Bias and Transcriptional Memory of human B cells" with public referee reports from Review Commons - see doi.org/10.1101/2022.07.14.499

Un proyecto de investigación suele durar 3 años. Pasado este tiempo, el proyecto debe generar publicaciones. Desde que se envía un artículo a una revista científica con un factor de impacto muy alto, hasta que se publica, a veces pueden pasar 2 años.

NEW ARTICLE: The Artist Life: How We Create

For some time, I’ve collected thoughts from artists on any number of subjects related to creation, inspiration, process, and more. I've begun to collate and share these on social media, in case they help others in any way. Find in this article quotes pertaining to question:

HOW DO WE CREATE?

In the discussion between the value of exploration and testing some researchers like to pose the two as opposites. I've often heard people say 'but think of the lucky discovery of penicillin'. In 'Advice to a young scientist' Peter Medawar dispells this specific myth, and with it the straw man opposition of exploration and confirmation. Chance favours the prepared mind.

I just found Mapstodon : a very nice interactive map of #Mastodon instances and their public timeline, grouped by region and interest.

"In this study, using cross-species models and multiple techniques, we revealed an uncharacterized role of endogenous retrovirus resurrection as a biomarker and driver for aging. Specifically, we identified endogenous retrovirus expression associated with cellular and tissue aging and that the accumulation of HERVK retrovirus-like particles (RVLPs) mediates the aging-promoting effects in recipient cells."

'More than 63 years after CP Snow deplored the “two cultures” that split scientists from humanists, too little has changed. Many “arts” folk still fondly believe creativity belongs exclusively to their tribe. They sneer at maths teaching as numbing formal exercises, or rigid training for careers of mindless servitude. Why can so few see that maths provision for every 16-to-18-year-old might actually open up possibilities to make Sunak squirm?'

"The revamping of Europe’s night-train network is gathering pace. Many new sleepers started running last month, among them Basel to Dresden and Stuttgart to Venice. The new overnight train from Munich to Liguria is 15 hours of railway heaven and the perfect way to the Cinque Terre coast."

One central question has motivated me for the last 10 years: how are immune responses to parasitic worms and allergens initiated?

Here Margaret McDaniel and I got to review some of the relevant literature and share our thoughts. Also check out original figures (artwork really) by Heber Lara.
