When life gives you lemons, make some of the funniest material ever caught on film.

"Harold (Ramis) embraced the cheapness of SCTV. Eugene (Levy), Catherine (O'Hara) and I were always moaning about how bad the sets looked and how shitty the props were. Harold would just chuckle and go, “That’s part of the charm!”"

I'm appalled by the ideas put forward by Michael Hill, head of grant management at @snsf_ch, in this "world view" article. I note with relief that SNSF has posted that these are his "personal views, which are not necessarily those of the SNSF", but it is still scary that the head of grant management at our main 🇨🇭 funding body for fundamental research seems to understand so little about fundamental research. nature.com/articles/d41586-023

'Negotiations' for the UK to rejoin the #Horizon research programme continue.... #JeremyHunt's in #Brussels trying (again) to get a discount because we've missed the first two years of the new programme.

Problem is that we caused that delay not the EU, and the feeling at the #EuropeanCommision is that they're not going to offer a discount because the UK can't get its ducks in a row.

Meanwhile #universities are hemorrhaging #researchers departing for somewhere they *can* get Horizon money now!

Our #MidweekMovie shows blood flow in control, alas2-/- and alad-/- zebrafish embryos. Peng Lv and Feng Liu find that while the number of circulating RBCs is normal in these mutants, survival of HSPCs is impaired.

People: "Why are you still wearing a mask? Nobody else does. "

Me: "I wear it indoors in shared airspace. My partner's second Covid infection crippled them.
I have significant carer duties now for both them and my kids. I can't afford to be crippled in turn."

Covid's not a big deal for most people.
Until it is.

"Despite this lower baseline phosphosignature, CD14+ monocytes and CD1c+ DCs from both patients and healthy donors showed very similar activation in response to atherosclerotic plasma. However, when exposed to healthy plasma, only immune cells from patients were activated, suggesting they have an intrinsic inflammatory capacity in response to the same stimulus."

Super excited that our expert recommendation on best practices for single-cell analysis across modalities is out @NatureRevGenet! Jointly led with @AnnaCSchaar, we recommend workflows based on benchmarks. Paper at rdcu.be/c8RU5 & extension at sc-best-practices.org.

"Single-cell transcriptomics reveals immune suppression and cell states predictive of patient outcomes in rhabdomyosarcoma"

Nice new work based on #scRNAseq from our Drost group colleagues at the #PrincessMaximaCenter. a.o., a potential role of #NECTIN3 and #TIGIT in #tumour-induced T cell dysfunction.

@cyrilpedia not sure I got it from context... how is that a spandrel? Surely the high affinity being retained would imply selection to favour bacterial protection, and therefore the function is correctly interpreted, regardless of how it arose?
