Copying Trump & Bolsonaro, the EU Far Right is now trying to dismantle environmental regulations.

'Pero esa apuesta de Vox también se materializa en promesas en los acuerdos con el PP que apuntan contra las políticas medioambientales que el partido ultra suele presentar como enemigas del campo'

Great to see a new wave of #Twittermigration, including many I think who relapsed.... welcome back! 😊

Here some low-tech tips:

- Use different #Hashtags, follow and search them. Eg I often do (random) country searches, always widens horizon
- check out people's pinned toots. You can pin several so a lot of 'top ware' there
- Be mindful that everything is real time, so go 'on', toot and boost at different times of day
- And check out #ClimateDiary !

'Bennett said the goal is to build a preclinical data package that shows efficacy across orthopoxviruses, which include mpox and smallpox, and then generate "robust" phase 1/2 data to inform dose selection and eventually licensure.'

'Even while I was saying that, though, it wasn't quite accurate - I mean, amphetamine (for one) definitely suppresses feeding behavior, just at a rather unacceptable cost in side effects. But for many years, that was the choice: a long list of things that didn't work, or a very short list of things that did but caused serious trouble along the way. The GLP-1 agonists are the first pharmacological class that seems to be breaking out of that dichotomy.'

My colleague Kevin Gross and I have a new preprint up on the arXiv.

Just for fun, rather than pure text simple text explainer, let's go some slides for a talk I'm giving at icssi.org/ tomorrow.

Here's the paper itself: Rationalizing risk aversion in science. arxiv.org/abs/2306.13816

Because this is like starting over for so any of us, my approach is to boost as much as I can to get your content into my network of followers. I'd appreciate if you do the same to get my content into your network.
This is a *social network*, and it will work better and faster if we all hold hands!

Context: Ethiopia's civil war, among the worst of the 21st century, left over half a million dead between 2020 & 2022, and devastated the country's economy. Since a peace treaty signed in November 2022, the recovery process has been gradual. Civil war & military spending in the midst of bloodshed and famine, has the famished relying on foreign aid, but there are no concrete solutions for the country's economic woes, including its severe shortage of foreign currency.

Looks like a Barbeito,

'But the 25-year bet, at least, has been resolved: No one has found a clear neural correlate of consciousness. Dr. Koch ended the evening by carrying to the stage a wooden box full of wine. He pulled out a 1978 bottle of Madeira and gave it to Dr Chalmers.'

"Right now, a map from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre shows a country spotted red with blazes, like it’s come down with a nasty case of chicken pox. Remarkably, these fires aren’t clustered in a single region: Their spread is the northern equivalent of New York and California burning at the same time, with additional fires stretched in between. According to the CIFFC, more than 509 fires are active in Canada, 253 of which are classified as “out of control.”'

Excellent new paper: Global insect decline is the result of wilful political failure: A battle plan for entomology onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

"The final point for the entomologist's battle plan is to develop the perfect simple catchphrase with longevity and impact to effectively set concern for insect wellbeing globally for the next decade or more" - Anyone got an advance on #LittleThingsThatRunTheWorld?

Can anyone recommend good accounts here to follow re the situation in Russia?

'The Schmidt fellowships, other postdoc programmes and workshops in the United States and elsewhere are now explicitly incorporating training for mentors and advisers in how to talk about failure, as well as offering workshops that are built around the dip into disappointment and the ascent out of it. Other efforts, although more ad hoc, are deliberate in helping PhD students and postdocs to weather dispiriting setbacks.'

Wildfire smoke - now extra toxic plumes from sun UV

Did you know just one of the many fires burning in Quebec is the size of an entire Canadian province (PEI), or large enough to stretch between the cities of Ottawa and Montreal or Toronto to Niagara Falls? Read on to learn more about why the smoke now smells like plastic and the health impact. 🧵 1/

the idea of being visited by aliens lost its appeal when i realized they’d likely just be some other planet’s asshole billionaires

After finally finding a place that feels more like home on mastodon, here goes the #introduction:
I am a PhD candidate in #computationalneuroscience at the University of Tübingen and Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, Germany.

I am interested in understanding the relationship between brain computations and dynamics. That's why I study population neural dynamics and their correlation structure underlying different behaviors (e.g., during selective attention tasks).

Looking forward to interactions in this space!

'Obese people often rebound to their former weights when they cease treatments and diet regimens. The British NHS has placed a two-year limit on injectables as obesity treatments, but what happens then? Pharma companies are preparing for a battle to keep on getting paid.'
