'It’s interesting that psychiatric hospitals are used as a cliche for “a situation of total chaos” – I think I’ve already mentioned the time when the director of a psych hospital I worked at told us, apparently without conscious awareness or irony, that if Obamacare passed our hospital would have too many patients and “the place would turn into a madhouse”.'

'Virus-based vectors — particularly those based on adeno-associated virus (AAV) and lentiviruses — have dominated the first wave of gene therapies to gain regulatory approval. But their widespread deployment in dozens of clinical trials has exposed their limitations.'

Hi there! Finally made the journey over from Twitter. Im going to reintroduce myself in hopes of expanding my network on here!

My name is Sami and im a neuroscientist. My graduate research helped characterise how S1 neuronal network communication becomes altered with aging, is sexually dimorphic, and how these changes can influence gait.

I just started as an assistant professor at Colorado State University, where I teach neuro, phys, and pharm for veterinary medicine and undergrad students. ♥️

( hoping a late #introduction is better than none
at all! )

Hi everyone,

I'm Sarah, a #chemistry prof at Hanover College in Indiana. My PhD work was in #membrane #protein #massspectrometry and now I've got a special interest in anything #neuro related! I teach an entire course on the biochemistry of psychoactive drugs and I'm still trying to get into research in that field because its super interesting to me! In the mean time I'm doing some #lcms of #cannabinoids and focusing on teaching.

Migrating to this server is a time for an #introducion !
I’m a PhD student working with @steveroyle, currently trying to make sense of different small transport vesicle populations that we affectionately call “molecular Skittles flavours” 🌈
I’m interested in all things #MembraneTrafficking and want to better understand the dynamic + self-organising properties of our cells’ endomembrane system as I continue my journey in #science 👩🏼‍🔬
I’m a night owl 🦉who’s happiest in the dark of microscopy rooms 🔬

@TerryHancock @onikaze

I'm currently trying to draw "ant people" -- these engines are worse than terrible for that kind of thing. But when I see how an artist decided to draw an ant person that *is* helpful.

Guess which images I'd put in my reference scrap book?

“Since its founding in 2021, Moms for Liberty has become the most notorious and prolific political organization pushing for book bans at schools and libraries across the country.

“What Moms for Liberty isn’t doing is advocacy—it’s a takeover,” said Emily Amick, an attorney, social media influencer, and founder of political change nonprofit For Facts Sake. “I want to push you to think bigger about what we’re up against and how to fight it.””

IFN responses in astrocytes promote brain metastasis by enhancing the recruitment of monocytic myeloid cells in both breast cancer and melanoma models'

Hi Fedipeople,
Do you know examples of **great coincidences** in History?

I am looking for some examples, to compare them to a statement I just read, saying that a natural origin of Covid, while Wuhan hosts a lab working on coronaviruses, "would be the greatest coincidence in the history of the world"

Please boost -- thanks!

Looks like a Barbeito,

'But the 25-year bet, at least, has been resolved: No one has found a clear neural correlate of consciousness. Dr. Koch ended the evening by carrying to the stage a wooden box full of wine. He pulled out a 1978 bottle of Madeira and gave it to Dr Chalmers.'

'Even while I was saying that, though, it wasn't quite accurate - I mean, amphetamine (for one) definitely suppresses feeding behavior, just at a rather unacceptable cost in side effects. But for many years, that was the choice: a long list of things that didn't work, or a very short list of things that did but caused serious trouble along the way. The GLP-1 agonists are the first pharmacological class that seems to be breaking out of that dichotomy.'

Just a printed image of thousands of flies, ants, spiders and butterflies fighting in a battle with tiny weapons. You see part of an allegory of the struggles of a Protestant spider and a Catholic fly in sixteenth-century England.

The author, John Heywood, published the book in 1556: 456 pages, 98 chapters.

The story: A fly named Buz gets caught in a spider web, and starts arguing with a spider about Catholics and Protestants. In the end this leads to a battle.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a green zone, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

with NO apologies to Robert Frost

I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.

So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a #phd too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?

Could you help me find as many PhD researchers as possible?

'Finally, and most recently, we have become interested in understanding the interactions of Toxoplasma with mucus. When you ingest Toxoplasma, it has to get through the , cross the mucous layer, get to the epithelium, cross the epithelium, find its way into the blood, and then into the brain and skeletal muscles. But I never really paused and thought about the impact of mucus on that initial infection until I taught . And so, now I'm interested in looking at the interaction of with goblet cells.'
