I finally had time to sit down and read this review, so far it's the most comprehensible review about the function of serotonin in the brain. My only gripe with it was that the gastrointestinal tract was solely used as an analogy, no functional links were drawn, the review would have been the same without it. Still, it's a great piece and I would highly recommend everyone who's interested in serotonin to read it.

Our faculty is offering six PhD positions, with a deadline of 1 Oct. This year applicants must express an interest in one of the faculty's research groups (listed on a linked page). My group is the Environmental Humanities Research Group, FYI. But there are lots of good ones listed.
This is a proper salaried position, with benefits and no non-thesis work or teaching required. Please boost and/or forward to interested folks.

@katejjeffery @cyrilpedia very true! There is no balance in a system where failure is the norm. Also because funding rates are too low, i.e. in lottery territory, feedback becomes borderline useless for the highest ranked, with reviews outcomes generally 'excellent' on all counts.
I also agree though that a culture where people expect to succeed whatever they do is not healthy and leads to bitter disappointment.
Balance is the key! Funding success rates should never be lower than 25/30%

@cyrilpedia Maybe instead we could focus on creating a system that doesn't set young researchers up to fail? Grant funding rates are abysmal - it makes it hard to learn from feedback when you don't get an early success, and it's demoralising +++
Steller’s sea cows were hunted to #extinction off #Alaska within 30 years of first observation by Europeans. Their closest relatives ( #manatees, #dugongs) live in much warmer waters.
How did Steller’s sea cows adapt to cold? Signore et al. (2023) reconstructed the #hemoglobin and showed a single mutation provided more oxygen to tissues for higher metabolic rates via multiple mechanisms - lower O2 affinity, higher solubility, etc.

What motivates antivaxxers? Their harmful grift is extremely profitable.

It is now painfully clear that no local government, state or federal agency, or other civic institution should be using Twitter for any purpose other than directing people to alternative platforms.
Using the platform for anything other than a last ditch backup for any kind of emergency communication is clearly a disaster waiting to happen.
#Hippocampus #Ripples - aren’t they the best? (with sound)
Notice how most of them show a positive deflection (positive Sharp-Wave) while the tetrode at the bottom right shows a negative SW, because it’s been moved past the CA1 cell layer!
(Data shown is from 16 #Tetrodes aimed at dorsal CA1, arranged in moveable bundles indicated by the colour)
