STING is a channel?
'On the basis of structural analysis, we hypothesized that human STING is a proton channel. Indeed, we found that STING activation induced a pH increase in the Golgi and that STING reconstituted in liposomes enabled transmembrane proton transport.'
'I was a cub reporter, with limited insight, for the public broadcaster.Following HIV during a controversial time when the government refused to provide antiretroviral drugs to people infected with the virus, quickly taught me an important thing – a pandemic isn’t simply a disease gone viral. It’s a political, social, economic and human rights crisis, because the germ that causes the outbreak travels through a society ravaged by inequality.'

For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.

People are getting paid for #publishing #AI-written #books, in an #author's name, when in fact the author did not, and knew nothing about this happening.
Then, when the author tries to do something about it to stop this obvious #abuse, they are told no.
"The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the first pill for postpartum depression, a milestone considered likely to increase recognition and treatment of a debilitating condition that afflicts about a half-million women in the United States every year."

In April I wrote about how this new class of drugs were developed for #NatureMedicine. Read it at the link below:
Paul Dirac (1902, discovered the relativistic equation for the wave function of fermions), Ernest Lawrence (1901, invented the cyclotron), and Roger Penrose (1931, developed the global view of spacetime and much of what we know about singularities in GR) were all born #OTD. Pretty good day for physics.
“These guys did something that I thought was very innovative and inventive,” said Paul Blumenthal, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Stanford University and one of the authors of the editorial accompanying the paper. He was not a part of this study. “I remember reflecting to myself when this paper came through … ‘Oh my goodness, after all this time, we don’t have good data on menstrual pads or menstrual products and their capacities?’”

'A fun book to dive into is “The Food of Vietnam,” by Luke Nguyen. The chapter about Hanoi serves you delicious introductions to the city’s most treasured dishes, such as cha ca (traditional fish cakes), bun cha (noodles with grilled meat and fried spring rolls), banh cuon (steamed rice crepes) and pho (Vietnamese noodle soup).'

Once again Ted Chiang has it exactly right. The immediate danger from #AI is not that it will become sentient and do whatever it wants. The danger is that it will do exactly what it’s being designed to do: help rich corporations destroy the working class in pursuit of ever-greater profits and thus concentrate wealth in fewer and fewer hands.

I made the terrible mistake of dimly remembering that the Portuguese man-o-war is not a jellyfish so trying to find out what they actually *are*
Anyway turns out they are floating colonies of at least 4 specialised organisms and science doesn't actually know anything about the early stages of their development, and there's at least one bit on the sex module (which they have, and it fucking swims off) that science no idea what it does.

@cyrilpedia in my lab we have so much single-use plastic equipment… and all the packaging…. If not contaminated it’s supposedly recycled but still, it makes me really sad. At least we have reusable gowns- in another lab I was they were also single use! 😱
