“It became the custom in such cases to give credit solely to the one who actually made the experiment work, even if others may have also conceived the idea. It was the drosophilists’ golden rule. Ideas that were engendered in the group’s informal shoptalk were treated as communal resource and not as personal property.”
(Robert E. Kohler, Lords of the Fly)

'Here, 273 individuals with or without LC were enrolled in a cross-sectional study that included multi-dimensional immune phenotyping and unbiased machine learning methods to identify biological features associated with LC.'

"The insecticides used since the 1970s, to spray in houses and on bed nets to protect sleeping children, have become far less effective; mosquitoes have evolved to survive them. After declining to a historic low in 2015, malaria cases and deaths are rising."

Merck filed a biologics license application for sotatercept in pulmonary arterial hypertension & now the FDA has granted it priority review.
merck.com/news/merck-receives-

I wrote about the drug last fall for Nature Medicine:

"BMPR-II regulates apoptosis and has anti-proliferative effects on pulmonary smooth muscle and endothelial cells. Sotatercept should assist BMPR-II in its tug-of-war with another TGF-beta family member, ActRIIA (which promotes proliferation), by selectively trapping activin pathway ligands. Unlike existing therapies that provide symptomatic management, sotatercept has the potential to be a curative treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension by modifying the underlying causes of the disease."

"Natural proteins are composed of 20 proteinogenic amino acids and their post-translational modifications (PTMs). However, due to the lack of a suitable nanopore sensor that can simultaneously discriminate between all 20 amino acids and their PTMs, direct sequencing of protein with nanopores has not yet been realized."

The first sentence of Paul Theroux's "The Pillars of Hercules" is still one of my favorites

1st of Oct 1990, 33 yrs ago, I stepped into the Genetics Dept to work with Michael Ashburner. Those in the know will realise that the real celebration will be in ~122 days 😎😎

There is ‘no limit’, write Nesse and Williams, ‘to the precision and complexity of adaptation that the Darwinian process can generate’.

All hail natural selection!

… unless, of course, the needed mutations fail to occur. #evolution

Norway wants Facebook behavioural advertising banned across Europe.

Norway has told the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) it believes a countrywide ban on Meta harvesting user data to serve up advertising on Facebook and Instagram should be made permanent and extended across Europe.

I've started a substack! I'll be using it instead of Twitter threads to post about latest Covid situation, latest NHS stats etc.. easier to share here on Mastadon, but more importantly, ensures my content remains *free*!

Next week, I'll be posting about latest Covid situation but also a look back at all the data we *used* to have and common biases in Covid data !

If you've valued what I've been doing on social media, please do subscribe - it's free!

'However journal-level metrics fail to identify up to 90% of the equally well-cited papers in the biomedical research literature, controlling for field and year of publication (4). In other words, the recall of the biomedical community’s chosen measure of meritorious papers is on the order of a dismal 10%'

Dose-finding study of rituximab, lenalidomide, and ibrutinib (R2I) in relapsed/refractory mantle cell #lymphoma

Gives hope, but be aware there are many issues (too numerous to mention in a toot) with small single-arm studies, such as how many were relapsed versus refractory, and Quality of Life while on continuous treatment. Let's hope the study team confirms with a larger controlled study.

I died as plant and rose to animal,
I died as animal and I was Man.
Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?"

He was a French physicist who, in his studies of the Brownian motion of minute particles suspended in liquids (sedimentation equilibrium), verified Albert Einstein's explanation of this phenomenon and thereby confirmed the atomic nature of matter. For this achievement he was honoured with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1926. via @wikipedia
