‘Wales, though. It’s not a huge place.’
‘It’s exactly the size it is, isn’t it?’ Shirely said. ‘Reports are always saying something’s “an area the size of Wales”. And that’s exactly the size Wales is.’
This was met with a short silence.

Interesting by Joachim Goedhart at the University of Amsterdam on storing and using data generated by students in training courses.

"I present an approach that I call studentsourcing. It collects, aggregates and re-uses data that is generated by students in a practical course on cell biology. The course runs annually and I have recorded the data that was generated by >100 students over 3 years."

@cyrilpedia And at a cost about half of the projected cost for merely the #HS2 London-Manchester line. Costs in the #UK for just about anything are absurd. One wonders where does the money go.

"Spike Lee is telling me the story of how he had to convince Frank Sinatra to let him use his music for Lee’s 1991 film Jungle Fever. Apparently, Ol’ Blue Eyes was upset about one of the film-maker’s earlier movies, Do the Right Thing."

KRAS update

"Here are the FDA briefing documents for the meeting being held today (Thursday, October 5). If you read Amgen’s press releases from the last two or three months and then read this stuff, you will feel as if you have stepped through a portal into another dimension."

When I read Jaron Lanier’s persuasive book “Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now” (2018), I consoled myself by saying, this doesn’t describe Twitter.

If it didn’t then, it certainly does now.

(e.g. “Social media is undermining truth”;
“Social media is making what you say meaningless”;
“Social media is making you an asshole.”) mastodon.social/@KaradelaMarck

Fun to find online Roger Ebert's 1969 review of Z - a perfect movie:

"These would seem to be completely political events, but the young director Costa-Gravas has told them in a style that is almost unbearably exciting. "Z" is at the same time a political cry of rage & a brilliant suspense thriller"

The example I will start with was created by a PhD student of a junior group for our division retreat: a game of life with a single modified rule where you have to figure out this rule. Surprisingly difficult but very instructive!
It was also very interesting to see how different teams presented/interpreted this rule after they had discovered it!

Next week I will start a new lecture series 'Being creative in physics', which is a kind of experiment. Basically, in an interactive format I want to help students understand how you tackle the unknown, where no one tells you what are even the right questions or which physical effects may be important. I will try to have them tackle various scenarios working in teams, like figuring out some mystery equations of motion etc. Read about it: pad.gwdg.de/s/ZpJd1xMoQ

Any ideas/suggestions?

The #iNaturalist fairy—by the hand of user ‘fonsv’–just delivered a precise species ID to an observation of mine of an #Ichneumonidae parasitoid wasp. A great match; mind these are hard to identify, primarily from the lack of available guides and accessible reference material. Mine is merely the 5th observation worldwide of this species.

'These publicly accessible databases aim to provide an overview of all animal studies (including those that are ongoing and work that may remain unpublished) to increase transparency and reduce unnecessary duplication of experiments. Unfortunately, usage to date has been low, with only a few hundred entries across each registry [7]. As a potential solution, we propose integrating preclinical registration within the animal use protocol (AUP) review process'

“His behaviour on the platform — he sets the tone from the top — he’s saying it’s OK to spread conspiracy theories as he does it himself,” said Kayla Gogarty, research director at left-leaning non-profit Media Matters. “This is the first big test for Musk’s version of X. The platform has failed this test.”

"For more than a decade, Twitter was an absolutely key resource for understanding major world events and disasters in real time. Open-source reporters and investigators pieced together the picture on the ground from primary sources and verified content. I’m calling it Twitter in this instance, because that was then. X is something different, although I’m sure we’re all on tenterhooks for its vaunted transformation into the everything app/surveillance capitalism dreamscape humanity deserves."
