@cyrilpedia hey that’s @meikeesther with a really great article. Sent it to everyone I know.

"This blog is highly biased on my n=1 experience. I am a Caucasian woman, married without children. I was asked about my marital status and the “moveability” of my husband at nearly all on-site interviews, and about children during half of them."

What is teleology today?

I've tripped over references to "teleology" from a 1968 paper and I'm trying to wrap my head around it. It's described as controversial, to say the least (CW: "teleology as a lady without whom no biologist can live without but he is ashamed to be seen with her in public." 🙄). link.springer.com/chapter/10.1

Teleological explanations are defined as, "the explanation of phenomena in terms of the purpose they serve rather than of the cause by which they arise."

Do brain researchers use it today? For instance, are normative models (like Bayesian models of decision making) teleological? There, researchers typically define the optimal solution for a problem and compare real behavior to it.

What about the neuroconnectionist program? There, researchers typically define a problem that needs to be solved (like labeling objects in images), train an ANN to perform it, and compare that ANN to the brain.

The few papers I've found that discuss teleology versus Normativity were impenetrable. Thanks in advance for pointers in the right direction!

"A new report from Tufts Medical Center’s New Drug Development Paradigms (NEWDIGS) program shows that cell and gene therapies for orphan diseases and hematological cancers are two to 3.5 times more likely to be successful than other types of treatments for similar conditions, or as compared to the entire drug pipeline."

"Educating doctors is a long and expensive process, but not every country can reward its graduates equally. Health spending per capita varies drastically in EU countries, from €816 per year in Romania to more than €4,000 in Luxembourg, Germany and other Western European countries. And so doctors and nurses follow the money."

"Up to 18 children from the UK, Spain and the US are being recruited to the study, which aims to transform treatment of auditory neuropathy, a condition caused by the disruption of nerve impulses travelling from the inner ear to the brain."

Hardest hit by the exodus of doctors and nurses: the EU's newest members, plus crisis-hit Portugal and Greece, according to POLITICO's analysis of Commission data.

"Suddenly you become a public figure being asked to do all sorts of things: to give lectures, quite often on topics you know little about; to sit on committees and reviews you are not always well qualified to be on; to visit countries you have barely heard of; to sign endless petitions on what are probably good causes, but you never know. It is like having a whole new extra job, with upwards of 500 requests a year. It is impostor syndrome on steroids."

Los expertos en verificación de información aseguran que la avalancha de falsedades nunca ha sido igual."

"Here are the FDA briefing documents for the meeting being held today (Thursday, October 5). If you read Amgen’s press releases from the last two or three months and then read this stuff, you will feel as if you have stepped through a portal into another dimension."

Last night, I deactivated my own Twitter account and walked away from an audience of 30,000 followers.

Because I no longer believe a moral argument can be made for staying on Twitter/X in 2023.
