The Return of Martin Guerre is a great book
"It is a measure of Natalie Zemon Davis’s influence as a historian that most people would struggle to name more than a handful of Renaissance monarchs, but a good many have heard of an obscure 16th-century French peasant called Martin Guerre."

"À imagem das propostas de Orçamento do Estado para 2022 e para 2023, também este ano não constava a dotação orçamental atribuída à FCT. Naqueles anos, os pedidos de confirmação do orçamento da FCT demoraram, respectivamente, três e dois dias a serem atendidos pelo ministério."
'Otto Hahn, who remained in Berlin, was so dependent on Meitner that he continued to collaborate with her, even after she’d fled to Sweden. He sent her the results of their experiments on postcards via courier. It was Meitner, not Hahn, who analyzed the results and discovered that they had split the atom. It was Meitner, not Hahn, who coined the term for her discovery—“nuclear fission”.

How do citizens across Europe view and evaluate democracy?
With Mónica Ferrín and Enrique Hernández, I have written up some results from ESS 6 and 10.
ESS 10 includes 31 countries, and new questions on populism!🎉
Overall, we find views and evaluations to be relatively stable over time. However, there are interesting country differences and changes in how citizens view and evaluate social and direct democracy.

"The maximum level considered safe by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is a long-term average of no more than 5 μg/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre).
Milan’s levels are almost four times the safe amount, at 19.7 μg/m3."

"It is unpopular with the general public and seen as un-American to admit someone based on who their parents are rather than on merit. But there was never any real political appetite to change it.”

"Like most medical researchers, Dr. Pattillo had known about the HeLa cells since he was a graduate student. As it happened, he had also been a fellow in the Johns Hopkins lab in Baltimore that had first cultured them, one of the few Black doctors working there in the late 1960s.
But unlike many other scientists, Dr. Pattillo was keenly focused on the fact that there was a human being behind those cells, and that she had left a family behind. For years he had wanted to honor her contributions to science."

"In recommendation letters, women and URM students are more likely to be described with personal attribute descriptors and communal adjectives rather than competencies [7,8]. For example, women are more likely to be described as having ‘compassion’ and ‘enthusiasm’. By contrast, men are more likely to be described as ‘exceptional’ or ‘outstanding’ [9]."

“The fact is, we’re not really ready,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development. “Our local health departments are very spotty with their ability to do mosquito control and to even try to diagnose these viruses and mosquitoes.”
