'My plan to study snapdragon transposons was met with scepticism. What new insights could I possibly hope to arrive at in a system that was so poorly developed compared with maize? I left inspired by her ageless mind but discouraged by her advice to forget snapdragons. Seven years later I was invited to give a talk in Cold Spring Harbor on the ABC model of flower development. Barbara (McClintock) was in the audience. After the talk, I mentioned to her that we’d met a while ago but assumed she wouldn’t remember. “Sure, I remember,” she said, “I gave you some bum advice”.

"We unravel a sub-lethal role of effector caspases in invasiveness by enhancing CIN-induced DNA damage and identify the JAK/STAT signaling pathway as an activator of apoptotic caspases through transcriptional induction of pro-apoptotic genes."

I shitcanned my Twitter 2 weeks ago.

Left behind 30,000 followers.

Only have 1000 here.

But I still get more traffic to my writing...

Which should tell you something about Birdchan.

Anyway, repost to support an indie transgender tech writer and journalist! ✍️🍕🏳️‍⚧️

"Here, we present our view of how IL-2-based biologicals can boost the antitumor response at a cellular level, and propose that the role of Tregs following such treatments may have been previously overestimated."

When sperm whales need a nap, they take a deep breath, dive down about 45 feet and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns. They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of 5 or 6 whales, presumably for protection. No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented the behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017 with Patrick Dykstra documenting sperm whales.

Oct 27 EWE: France — One year after France's Gironde wildfires, bark beetles attack forests. In the forest of La Teste-de-Buch, in south-western France, 3,500 hectares went up in flames last year. Since then, loggers have worked overtime, fighting a war on two fronts: to cut down and sell on the burnt wood for whatever it might still be good for, and also limit the spread of the bark beetle, a winged insect capable of colonising trees within a 10 to 20-kilometre radius. france24.com/en/tv-shows/down-

"The beginning of a global pandemic was a terrible time to get into a fight over words. But she had an inkling that the verbal sparring was a symptom of a bigger problem—that outdated science was underpinning public health policy. She had to get through to them. But first, she had to crack the mystery of why their communication was failing so badly."

Thanks to Miguel Godinho Ferreira & Karina Xavier for the invitation to teach in the "From Cells to Organisms" module in the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia PhD program.

Here's a classic reading recommendation for anyone interested in the topic who's looking for a starting point.

"It is unpopular with the general public and seen as un-American to admit someone based on who their parents are rather than on merit. But there was never any real political appetite to change it.”
