Not great. Gantenerumab is a monoclonal antibody against aggregated Aβ:
"Among persons with early Alzheimer’s disease, the use of gantenerumab led to a lower amyloid plaque burden than placebo at 116 weeks but was not associated with slower clinical decline."

'In this Brief Review, we discuss recent findings that inform the design of the next generation of COVID-19 vaccines. In the context of prior SARS-CoV-2 evolution, we discuss strategies under investigation for the induction of broadly neutralizing Abs (bNAbs) to restrict SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, we examine recent evidence for the importance of mucosal immunity in restricting SARS-CoV-2 transmission. We further consider the challenges associated with these next-generation vaccine strategies, including overcoming “original antigenic sin”'

Meanwhile, in Portugal, no trains & more airports:
"The Socialist Workers' Party of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has signed a coalition deal with the far-left Sumar party that includes some 230 policy promises covering the next four years — including a pledge to limit short flights within the country."

The US House voted last night to attach a ban on gain-of-function research to legislation that would fund the NIH and other federal health agencies. Where it will go from here, though, is unclear. My @STAT colleague Sarah Owermohle reports. https://www.statnews.com/2023/11/15/gain-of-function-research-limit/
"Inevitably, people have suggested that pulling a move to restore Cameron to the frontline is like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, but arguably that doesn’t really cover it. This is not like shifting the deckchairs in 1912, an hour after the iceberg had hit, but like doing it now, in 2023, when David Cameron’s form has been largely consumed by molluscs, and fish have been swimming in and out of his cavities, along with the various Treasury committee members who in 2021 probed his lucrative lobbying of ministers on behalf of the now-collapsed Greensill Capital. These days, he’s arguably more reef than man."

'Although mouse and human MAIT cell transcriptomes showed similarities for immature cells in the thymus, they diverged more strikingly in the periphery. Analysis of pet store mice demonstrated decreased lung MAIT17 cells in these so-called “dirty” mice, indicative of an environmental influence on MAIT cell subsets and function.'

How many trees does your institution have planted in #TheForestOfBiologists, our new biodiversity initiative with support from The Woodland Trust? For each #Research Article or #Review article we publish, we are planting a tree in a UK forest. The Forest of Biologists is a celebration of the work of the scientists whose research and expertise fills our journals, and it is a clear statement of The Company of Biologists’ commitment to sustainability. https://forest.biologists.com/
