Here is a story about a world map of a European that lived around 1300 AD. The drawn map features south at the top, and shows "africa" in the upper part, “Asia” in the lower part left, and “Europa” in the lower part right. Africa is symbolized as a mosque with tall buildings, which explains the Islamic influence of the map orientation: Christian maps of the period have East at the top. However, let’s have a look at the details.

(Boosting is welcomed) I'd like to find a #peertube server (instance?) accepting general #scientific #research videos, coming from international #workshops #conferences, or remote #seminars I made. My main research fields are #appliedmathematics, #inverseproblem, #optics, and #machinelearning. I don't have the possibility to create one server myself but I'm ready to support one. So far, I've parsed many possibilities but either they are closed and do not accept any new users, or I'm off topic with respect to their content and objectives. Any advice?

Absolutely wild that just over the course of my lifetime so far, the share of income going to the bottom 50% of the US income distribution has dropped from 20% to 12%, while income going to the top 1% of the income distribution has risen from 11% to 20%.

In 2015 dollars, the average income per adult of the bottom 50% of the US has stayed $15K/year for more than 40 years, but the average income of the top 1% has increased from $400K to $1.3M/yr per adult.

Hey #Fediverse, dear #Histodons, let there be more paper among us. This is the start of a series devoted to #PaperHistory - especially but not exclusively to the first European paper era from c14-c18.

Let's start with schools in early modern Europe. Schools were social spaces of learning and teaching, and above all, paper was present. What you see is an imagined schooling scene from the seventeenth century by Jan Steen. Highlighted are papers. Have a look.

Science is cool!
And this thing here even more so.
I got to take apart an Adiabatic Demagnetisation Refrigerator Cryostat with the wonderful @stdlogicvector , a small cryostat that was used to cool a transition edge sensor to ~40 mK.
It works by applying a magnetic field to some funny materials, and when removing that field the material cools down below its original temperature, which is 4.2 kelvin in this case.
The main cooling is done by a huge amount of LN2 and LHe.

“At the start of this project, Miyazaki came to me and asked me, ‘This is going to be about my story, is that going to be O.K.?’ I just nodded,” Suzuki recalled with the matter-of-factness of someone who’s learned it would be futile to stand in the way of the director.'

We see that certain groups are major drivers of this article growth, in some cases seemingly out of nothingness. This includes your classic publishers like #Elsevier and #Springer, but also the upstarts #Frontiers and… most significantly #MDPI.

In numbers, there were nearly 1 million more articles per year published in 2022 (2.8m) compared to 2016 (1.9m). MDPI takes the lion’s share at 27% of that growth, with Elsevier (16%) a distant 2nd.

How did we get to this point? 3/n

Yup. Looks like you can atone for original antigenic sin. As with all learning, repetition is key 🥲 (The sky ain’t falling.
