'Here, we review our present understanding of the various pathways to cell death. The literature is extensive and, at times, confusing and even contradictory. As such, at the risk of missing certain advances, we have chosen to emphasize concepts that have been pressure-tested through a combination of biochemistry and genetics and are therefore likely to stand the test of time.'

Neisseria gonorrhoeae scavenges host sialic acid for Siglec-mediated, complement-independent suppression of neutrophil activation biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

'In both mice and rats, env and gag-pol read values were highly correlated across conditions. In contrast, in P. leucopus the magnitudes of fold-change upwards for gag-pol was less than in mice or rats, & transcription of the env sequence was actually lower in LPS-treated animals than in controls.'

"Our data suggest that active Long Covid is accompanied by a blood protein signature marked by increased complement activation and thromboinflammation, including activated platelets and markers of red blood cell lysis. Tissue injury may also be complement-mediated and, in turn, activate the complement system." science.org/doi/10.1126/scienc

'The budget, which represents an increase of 4% over last year and is a $2 billion increase over the 2021 budget, comes as global contributions to health in the lowest-income countries are stalling. While overall aid spending has leveled off, sub-Saharan African countries saw a nearly 8% decline in aid in 2022, even as they face growing needs and shrinking budgets due to debt and other financial pressures. The foundation has committed to increasing its annual spending to $9 billion by 2026.'

'Neuroscientist Anita Lüthi would like to see future studies elucidate how the PV neurons decrease brain connectivity without shutting it down completely. “Sleep is not a coma; we are not totally knocked out,” says the University of Lausanne-based researcher. Perhaps there’s a parallel system that keeps some basal connectivity intact, she hypothesizes. Dan says the work is also getting a lot of attention from anesthesiologists, who are interested in knowing how the brain’s response to different forms of anesthesia compares to its response to sleep.'

After a month-long hiatus, @evodevo_papers has resumed posting the latest #EvoDevo papers!

I re-wrote the backend to be more robust and flexible. For now, only the basic functionality is restored: fetching articles from a few journal feeds and tooting them once a day.

Note that the posts are unlisted and won't show up in public timelines or hashtag searches.

So, please boost the papers you find worth sharing! It's the only way they can reach people who don't follow the account.

Hans Kluge (WHO/Europe) just killed the concept of public, I repeat, *public* health.

He should resign IMHO.

#OTD 18 January 1689 Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu was born. Montesquieu's political writings, particularly on the separation of powers, became hugely influential on modern global governments, with the US first adopting them for the Constitution.

The Failed Promise of Independent Election Mapmaking

In Washington and other states, independent redistricting commissions have fallen prey to partisanship, just like the legislative bodies they were meant to replace.

Giving Drunk UK Man a run for his money...

"A drunk US man allegedly bit the arm of a flight attendant on a passenger jet headed to Seattle from Tokyo on Tuesday night, forcing the plane’s return to the Japanese capital, according to local reports."

Preprint learning moment.

Much alarmist press on this preprint. But the TLDR from people who actually know is a) it's an existing virus already reported in other papers b) these mice often die when exposed to viruses of this type (they are engineered to have high levels of ACE2 in the brain) i.e. it's the mice not the virus.

Whether it's a good/bad paper is another question, but "motivated takes and misunderstanding" not "OMG military virus" seems the lesson disq.us/p/2xbrwu4

R to @ERC_Research: Over 2023's three #ERCPoC competition rounds, 240 projects received a total of €36 million in top-up innovation funding.

What are the projects about?

So many interesting investigations...we describe three to give you a taste.
