'Orwell was obsessed by the deterioration of the English language in the hands of the journalists and pundits, and nothing in his Nineteen Eighty-Four is more memorable than his creation of Newspeak.'
'Half of the $18.7bn spent on R&D to tackle priority diseases between 2014 and 2022 was provided by the US government. The reliance on US funding was a “major vulnerability” that leaves pandemic preparedness “very sensitive” to political upheavals, the 100 Days Mission report said.'

'A decisão de Miguel Albuquerque de não apresentar demissão é criticável sob vários pontos de vista. Desde logo, as suspeitas que recaem sobre ele são de extrema gravidade. Corrupção, prevaricação e participação económica em negócio e atentado contra o Estado de Direito figuram entre os crimes que a investigação em curso imputa ao presidente do Governo Regional da Madeira.'

'Karikó’s career, however, is a story of snakes and ladders. The first snake was the late Robert Suhadolnik, who had invited her to join his biochemistry team at Temple. He could be an encouraging, even inspiring boss, but was also a temper-driven tyrant. When Karikó was offered a job at Johns Hopkins University, an enraged Suhadolnik sabotaged the move and reported her to the US immigration authorities for visa violation. But she managed to avoid deportation and found positions at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences outside Washington DC, then at the University of Pennsylvania.'

@eLife Some embedded samples of the calls in this Digest summary would be great, if possible 👍
'Australian science has been “left behind” as federal funding for research and development sinks to a 30-year low, a leading technology organisation has warned, with concerns that the shortfall is leaving the nation open to economic shocks and shortages of critical items like vaccines.'
'Mounjaro will become available “within weeks” in Great Britain for treatment of both diabetes and obesity, after the medicines regulator authorised US pharma company Eli Lilly on Thursday to sell the weight loss drug in an injectable pen.'

British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron died #OTD in 1879.
She is considered one of the most important portraitists of the 19th century. She is known for her soft-focus close-ups of famous Victorian men and women, for illustrative images depicting characters from mythology, Christianity, and literature, and for sensitive portraits of men, women and children. via @wikipedia
What I love about #Greenpeace is they do nothing small. Greenpeace and unmute #Gaza decided to unfurl this mural on a Museum in Madrid, Spain.
"In Europe, reported measles cases rose more than 40-fold last year compared with 2022, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday. Nearly a third of those cases were in Kazakhstan, where the outbreak is attributed largely to children who missed routine immunizations."

An open approach for classifying research publications https://www.leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/an-open-approach-for-classifying-research-publications
In this blog post @neesjanvaneck and I introduce a fully open classification of research publications based on @OpenAlex data.
The development of this classification is part of the transition to open research information that we are working on at @cwts https://www.leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/toward-open-research-information-introducing-the-information-openness-focal-area-at-cwts.
The classification is a key building block for the Open Edition of the Leiden Ranking that will be published on January 30.
'I say that because some of these papers have been out there in the literature for years now, and several of them have accumulated many skeptical comments at PubPeer over that time. And as you'd expect from a place like Dana-Farber, these didn't appear in a bunch of open-access journals that are run out of someone's van in Samarkand - no, these are scattered across Science, Nature, Cell, and other marquee sites. And I can't overemphasize just how many examples there are - that For Better Science post just goes on and on, with cut-and-paste jobs in blots, graphs, photomicrographs, you name it.'

In his essays, Walter Benjamin sought to understand the nature of modernity. He drew on Marxism but was not contained by it, ranging across literature, art, popular culture, even Jewish mysticism.

Preprint:
"Here, we provide a set of recommendations for sharing code, with an eye toward guiding those who are comparatively new to applying open science principles to their computational work. Additionally, we review existing literature on the topic, summarize the most common tips, and evaluate the code-sharing policies of the most influential journals in biology, which occasionally encourage code-sharing but seldom require it."
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
